President Schall

February 11, 2008

Dear friends:

Some of you may have seen local news stories over the weekend reporting that as a result of prior year budget deficits, our accreditation organization issued us a warning. Most of the news reports went on to include incorrect information and rampant speculation. What is most important to know is: Oglethorpe remains fully accredited.

Since I arrived at Oglethorpe at the end of fiscal year 2005, we have moved quickly and effectively to build a new business model. We have been executing it successfully for the past 30 months. Our total net assets have grown over 20% in that time. The operating deficit that existed then has been eliminated. Opening the Phase II residence hall last August represented the completion of $24 million in capital improvements to the campus in the past two years. We have set fundraising records in each of the last two years, and our annual fund is on track to set yet another record this year thanks to the generosity of alumni, foundations and friends. Finally, our total number of applications is quickly approaching 4,000 for fall 2008. I am honored that so many of you have taken a deeper look at Oglethorpe, and I trust you like what you see. Not only are applications up, but our financial base is strong.

As I write to you today, I’m attending a conference of regional university presidents where I delivered a speech on the value of service and citizenship. It is a very timely subject and germane to Oglethorpe. We’re all excited by recent developments on campus and while the topic matter is fresh, I thought I would take a moment to bring you up to date:

  • Just this morning Oglethorpe was recognized by the president of the United States and the President’s Corporation for National and Community Service for its commitment to civic engagement and service-learning – the highest such national honor. Today’s designation makes two consecutive years in which we have received the prestigious award.
  • Our baseball team opened the season by sweeping a Saturday doubleheader with Maryville College. That evening our men’s and women’s basketball teams swept Sewanee in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play. Our men’s golf team was ranked #1 in the nation in a pre-season coach’s poll.
  • On Wednesday we will celebrate Oglethorpe Day on campus, honoring the university’s namesake, and Georgia founder, James Edward Oglethorpe. Our guest will be Pat Conroy, prolific Southern author and storyteller – and a New York Times bestseller. We will watch students race against the Carillon bells in the Petrels of Fire Race, hear from Mr. Conroy and our Gospel choir, then enjoy a Georgia-themed lunch.
I know that those of you who have been able to visit with us recently have experienced the explosion of good news here. For those of you who have not been by in a while, we invite you to visit.

Best,
Larry
