Studies in education at Oglethorpe include the following undergraduate courses as well as the Master of Arts in Teaching – Early Childhood Education (MAT) Program.

Grounded in the liberal arts tradition, the education program emphasizes strong academic preparation of teachers who are lifelong learners. Teacher education at Oglethorpe University is designed to challenge students to think critically about issues in education, to be informed decision makers, and to become change agents in their schools. The program also has strong connections to the Atlanta community, both urban and suburban. Oglethorpe is committed to preparing teachers for the variety of settings and diverse populations of metropolitan schools.

The following courses are offered as co-requisites to the Master of Arts in Teaching - Early Childhood Education (MAT) program.


EDU 101. Introduction to Education

4 hours

A study of the historical development, the philosophy, and the political and social issues underlying the American educational system and the teaching profession. Provision is made for classroom observation in public schools in the Atlanta area.
 

EDU 201. Educational Psychology

4 hours

A study of learning theory and its application to such problems as classroom management, the organization of learning activities, understanding individual differences, and evaluating teaching and learning. Emphasis is given to factors which facilitate and interfere with learning. Prerequisite: PSY 101 with a grade of "C" or higher.
 

EDU 401. The Exceptional Child

4 hours

This course is designed to assist regular classroom teachers in the identification and education of children who have special needs. In addition to characteristics of special learners, students will study topics such as the referral process, educational approaches for use with special learners, methods of diagnostic teaching, mainstreaming, and inclusion. Prerequisites: EDU 201 and admission to the Teacher Education Program.
