Oglethorpe University is pleased to offer a variety of fun and enriching informal classes to the community. Participation in Community Courses is open to the general public; enrollment in an Oglethorpe degree program is not required. Each class is limited; advance registration is encouraged.

NEW CLASS!

Cameras and Photography

Like to take photographs?  Whether you want to learn about your camera or more about basic techniques and composition, this class will suit you.  We will discuss the operation of your camera, basic guidelines on capturing what you see and what you want others to see, the lens, focus and depth of field, perspective, and automatic and manual settings.  There will be lots of opportunity for shooting and discussion, including an optional outside daytime field trip to learn more.  Finally we will spend time discussing how to organize and print your photos.  Classes will be held Tuesday evenings, Oct. 27, Nov. 3, Nov. 10 and Nov. 17 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Tuition is $120 and in addition to in-classroom instruction includes at photo field trip to an area attraction.  Pre-registration is required and space is limited. Ballroom Dancing

Put On Your Dancing Shoes

Whether you are a beginner or an experienced dancer, these relaxed and fun classes will teach you new steps and enhance your style. 7 Seven week series, September 14 through October 26. 

Ballroom I: 6:30 - 7:30 p.m.

Open Dance Practice: 7:30 - 8 p.m.

Ballroom II: 8:00 - 9:00 p.m.

Ballroom III:  8:00 - 9:00 p.m.

Career on Purpose

Explore New Directions

Join the staff of Oglethorpe University's Career Services department for a series of four classes designed to help members of the community enhance their job search, networking, resume and personal presentation skills. Wednesday evenings, September 30 through October 21. 6:30-7:30 p.m., Hearst Hall room 103. Classes are free to current Oglethorpe students, faculty, staff and alumni.

The cost of the series is $40 for all others. Registration may be submitted online by using the link provided at left. Payment may be made in advance or on the first evening of the course. Pre-registration is required and space is limited. Wine Appreciation

Wine Basic Training:  Albariño to Zinfandel in Four Weeks

Taught by Certified Wine Specialist, Maggie Meroney, this series of four wine appreciation classes will be held in the University's Philip Weltner Library Museum from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Tuesday evenings, October 13 through November 3.  This series will take the mystery out of wine for the beginner.  Learn about grape varietals, their origins and the fascinating history of this ancient elixir. Become comfortable with restaurant wine menus and wine tasting techniques. $180 per person, $150 for Oglethorpe students with I.D., faculty and staff. Yoga

Open your heart, awaken your spirit, broaden your physical expectations!

Join Dominique Nero, certified Kripalu yoga instructor with 22 years of teaching experience. We invite the curious, the beginner and the intermediate student to participate. Every Tuesday night at 6:00 p.m., Oglethorpe University, Schmidt Center Dance Studio.  Oglethorpe students are $25 per month (4 classes), faculty, staff $40 per month, $15 per individual class. All others $50 per month or $15 per individual class. Pre-registration is not required and payment can be made to the instructor at the beginning of the class. Mat Pilates for Beginners

Learn the Techniques of Pilates and Strengthen Your Core Muscle Groups
If you have heard about the amazing strengthening and toning benefits of Pilates but have been afraid to give it a try this class is for you.  Join experience instructor Dominique Nero as she guides this class carefully through moves focused on the core postural muscles which help keep the body balanced and are essential to providing support for the spine.  Class meets every Tuesday afternoon at 4:30 p.m., Oglethorpe University, Schmidt Center Dance Studio.  Oglethorpe students are $25 per month (4 classes), faculty, staff $40 per month or $15 per individual class.
