Rebecca Secula

Hello everyone! My name is Rebecca Secula, and I joined the Oglethorpe team in August 2013 as an Admission Counselor. I’m so excited to work for such a progressive and innovative school! Being born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, I decided to push outside of my comfort zone by attending college at John Carroll University in Cleveland, Ohio. While there, I studied abroad twice in Beijing, China, and I attended a three- week class excursion to several different cities in Japan. I also interned for the Cleveland Council on World Affairs and worked for the JCU Office of Admission for three years, which developed in me a passion for working in a collegiate environment. Once I graduated magna cum laude in May of 2013 with a degree in East Asian Studies, I decided I needed to leave my comfort zone once again and start an entirely new life. Starting my career in Atlanta, Georgia, was the best decision I’ve ever made! This city is bursting with energy, which makes every day just as exciting as the last.

Atlanta has been a great city to explore, but the reason why my move has been so successful is Oglethorpe. This small school has the perfect location because it allows you the freedom to experience fast city life whenever you want, but takes you back into a tranquil and peaceful environment as soon as you step on campus. More importantly, Oglethorpe will become your new family, not just your new school. We have such a fun, supportive, and welcoming environment, and I am so proud to be representing our black and yellow Stormy Petrel community. I hope you decide to make a visit to our campus and experience all of what Oglethorpe University can offer you.

Favorite spot on campus: The Turner Lynch Campus Center. It feels so modern and alive, definitely an ideal place to study or relax—not to mention the cool new Mongolian Grill in the dining hall!
Favorite OU event or tradition: I love the Oglethorpe Orientation Day of Service. Having a specific day dedicated to volunteering creates an atmosphere that emphasizes the importance of being a part of the greater community. It is a day to give back and dedicate a few hours to the well-being of others.
Favorite OU trivia: My favorite fact has to be that OU houses the Crypt of Civilization. The crypt is an airtight chamber, not to be opened until the year AD 8113, which holds various items that represent our culture for the future population of the world.
Favorite Atlanta spot: Atlanta is a foodie’s paradise, so I can’t pick one restaurant as my favorite. My top two favorites would definitely be Sotto Sotto and South City Kitchen-- some of the best Italian, and chicken and waffles, in the city!
Favorite music: My favorite band in the entire world is Train, so all of their albums are winners to me.
Most interesting place I've been: The most interesting place I’ve ever been has to be in the small town of Yangshuo, located in Southern China. While I was there, I took a boat ride along the Li river and saw karst peaks, held cormorants, and went mud caving. I’ve also climbed up the famous Mount Tai in Tai’an, China.
