Past examples of civic engagement include:

--The Oglethorpe University-Brookhaven Community Garden project.

--A comprehensive video of the Center for Civic Engagement’s trips to New Orleans to help reconstruct the city after the destruction of Hurricane Katrina.

--A winter break trip to New Orleans in 2007. Thirty students spent one full week helping to gut and de-mold homes in the city while learning first-hand about the rebuilding process. --Participation in Hands On Atlanta's Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service.

--Recent OUr Atlanta trips to The King Center, Chick-fil-A, Coca-Cola headquarters, High Museum, Atlanta History Center, CNN and the CDC.

--Dr. Knippenberg hosting a series of political candidates for discussions with students.

--Sister Helen Prejean giving a keynote address to our Dialogue on the Death Penalty conference, which included Mike Farrell from M*A*S*H.

--A trip to three New York art galleries by Alan Loehle's Advanced Painting students.

--The Oglethorpe Golf teams training students at Drew Charter School in partnership with First Tee of East Lake.

The center also awarded the first two Presidential Awards for Civic Engagement in November 2006. Awards were presented to Jessica Daniel '09, president of ECOS, for creating a student-run recycling program on campus, and to the men's basketball team, who was named the John Swain Volunteer of the Year by the Metro Atlanta Boys and Girls Club.

Oglethorpe Honors

The Men's Basketball Team was named the 2006 John Swain Volunteer of the Year by the Metro Atlanta Boys and Girls Club for providing over 200 hours of service to local children. Read the full release.

 

 

Oglethorpe was named to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for distinguished community service and for the extraordinary volunteer efforts by the school and its students to serve Gulf Coast communities devastated by Hurricane Katrina. Oglethorpe was one of only 28 schools in the country given a dual distinction. Read the full release.
