Oglethorpe University-Brookhaven Community Garden
Thank you Brookhaven! After months of planning, the community garden has been created thanks to the donations of the Center for Civic Engagement, Davis Landscaping and Oglethorpe Presbyterian Church. On Monday, February 16 from 10am-2pm 40 volunteers braved the cold weather and created a vegetable garden on the vacant lot where a pool use to sit. Bon Appetit provided lunch for all the volunteers. Volunteers included 7 Oglethorpe students, 1 faculty member, President Larry Schall and his wife Betty Londergan, 3 Center staff members, 1 alumna, 4 members from Brookhaven Christian Church, 9 members from Oglethorpe Presbyterian Church, 6 teachers from St. Martin’s Episcopal School, and 7 community volunteers. There are six raised beds that are home to broccoli, cabbage, collard greens, mustard greens, and turnips. These green leafy vegetables will be harvested in April and Spring crops will be planted. Anyone interested in volunteering to water the garden on Mondays, Wednesdays or Fridays should contact hstan@oglethorpe.edu.
