Near the end of his first semester at Oglethorpe Nick Etherington '10 was preparing for his first lead in a school production.

"It's great to be told I can do it," said the freshman from Hoover, Alabama, who was involved in theatre at Spain Park High School. After auditioning on a whim with friends, Nick starred as Cliff in Oglethorpe's production of Cabaret.

"That we put on a show like Cabaret says a lot," said Nick. "For a small theatre program, it's pretty good."

Undecided on a major, Nick enrolled in a sampling of courses this fall - Elementary Japanese, Psychology Inquiry and Beginning Characterization along with Narratives of the Self.

"Oglethorpe was the best fit for me," he said. "I love the small campus and the classes. Plus the people here are really nice. Everyone has apprehension about whether they chose the right place, but I'm happy with my choice."

As part of the freshman experience, Oglethorpe offered a trip to Coca-Cola headquarters and the World of Coca-Cola during orientation weekend. Nick went along with his classmates and later went to the Center for Puppetry Arts with his Live Theatre Fresh Focus class.

"I had never been to Coke headquarters before, so seeing [former Coca-Cola President Robert] Woodruff's office was neat," said Nick. "Those trips helped me see different parts of the city that I may not have seen otherwise."

Getting to know a new city and meeting new people is part of the college experience. For Nick, being part of the Cabaret cast helped as well.

"Being a freshman involved in theatre, I've gotten to know a lot of upperclassmen. They've been helping me out a lot," said Nick. "After rehearsal a bunch of us will go to 'fourth meal' (a late-night dining option in the cafeteria) to eat and hang out. For the most part I was around people who may be older than me, but they want me to hang out with them. What class you're in isn't such a big deal."

In his second semester, Nick looks forward to deciding on a major, which might be psychology. "I'd been interested in it for awhile, but I hadn't had a class in it yet." No matter which discipline he chooses, Nick hopes to continue his work in Oglethorpe's theatre program. "I've grown to love theatre and tech work. If I can keep doing it, I will."
