Assistant Professor of Art Alan Loehle took his Advanced
Painting class to New York City for a day to study,
up-close-and-personal, masterpieces they have studied and analyzed in class.
The
ten students met at Oglethorpe around 5:00 a.m. on November 3.
Arriving in New York, they saw Grand Central Station and then toured the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the
Whitney Museum of American Art and The Frick Collection during
their whirlwind excursion. They arrived back in Atlanta late
Friday evening.
Dela Hayes Coward ’07, an art therapy major, was on the trip.
“Seeing three Rembrandts in person at The Frick brought tears to
my eyes, literally,” she said. “There is nothing I have ever
seen in a book that was that rich in color and depth.”
“Then seeing Picasso's portrait of Vollard at The Met was
amazing. It looked like parts of it were coming right off the
canvas - Also, Picasso's Three Musicians at The Whitney. I could
tell where he changed his mind on colors even - I wasn't
expecting that intense of a reaction to those pieces since
Picasso has never been one of my favorites. He is now!”
