After 17 years as a Delta Air Lines pilot, Bob Morrison turned to Oglethorpe’s Certified Financial Planner® program to help him manage his money. Along the way, he found a rewarding second career.

“I got very interested in managing my own money,” he said following his early retirement from the then-bankrupt Delta. “I read 15 to 20 books on investing and found I was interested in it.”

After searching for a financial planner program, he found Oglethorpe’s 18-month program. Doubling up on courses, he will complete the program in just under a year.

“The classes have been excellent. All the instructors are outstanding,” he said. “They give individual attention to students, they’re very approachable, and they’re all very qualified.”

Although investment planning is his specific area of interest, he finds each component of the program – insurance, tax, retirement and estate planning – necessary. “Everything fits together like a giant puzzle,” he said.

“Actually going to class [rather than taking an online course] is absolutely the way to go,” Morrison said. “I would have lost a lot by doing it strictly online. You can’t quantify the personal interactions. It’s invaluable both in what you learn and as a motivational tool.”

After completing the program this summer, Morrison plans to establish his own investment planning company. He already has friends asking him to manage their retirement accounts.
