As a receptionist at Atlanta’s City Hall, Carolyn Monden learned the importance of a warm welcome. She found such an atmosphere at Oglethorpe University in 2004 after responding to a radio ad for the evening degree program.

“I like the fact that everyone knows your name,” said the history major. “After I applied, I was really impressed with everyone and it immediately felt like home. Everyone was so attentive.”

After taking some time off to become a mother, Carolyn expects to graduate in 2009. “What I like most about Oglethorpe is because you are here at this great school, you don’t want to let anyone down. This includes your professors, the staff or yourself for that matter. They have done everything they can to make this an easy process for you, so the least you can do is come and do what you are supposed to do.”

Carolyn was encouraged in her plans to return to school by her family. “For a long time I wanted to go back to school, but I wasn’t sure I could do it,” she said. “My husband knew I could and did not let a day go by without telling me.”

Post-graduation, Carolyn is considering graduate school. Some of the classes I have taken have led me to want to be an activist for education, especially for inner-city children. It has a lot to do with my personal story. I want to make a difference in any way that I can.”
