Oglethorpe University invites applications and
nominations for the position of Provost.
Oglethorpe University is a Carnegie
Baccalaureate / Liberal Arts institution
founded in 1835 and located on a beautiful
campus in Atlanta. A highly-selective
independent university with an enrollment of
over 1,000 and a commitment to personalized
education, Oglethorpe offers academic programs
grounded in the liberal arts. Its 800 full-time
traditional undergraduates are drawn
primarily from the top 25 percent of secondary
school graduates, with an even balance of in-
and out-of-state students. Many of the 200 students in
the Evening Degree Program, Oglethorpe's evening program for working adults, are typically
employed by Atlanta's leading corporations.
Ninety-four percent of the nationally recruited
full-time faculty hold the terminal degree.
Oglethorpe offers its traditional
undergraduates the Bachelor of Arts and
Bachelor of Science degrees. Students in the Evening Degree Program may receive a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies or a Bachelor of Business Administration. Oglethorpe also offers a Master of Arts in Teaching Early Childhood
Education and a Certificate in Financial Planning.
The signature program of the University is
the Core Curriculum which offers our students a
common intellectual experience through a series
of integrated and sequenced interdisciplinary
courses. The Core is supported by an endowment
funded by NEH and earmarked for faculty
development. The University believes that the
skills and perspectives acquired through a
traditional liberal arts education foster a
sense of citizenship which can effectively
confront contemporary challenges concerning
race, economic opportunity, class, religion,
scientific discovery and national identity. Our
location in Atlanta provides the opportunity
for our students to engage directly in many of
these challenges. The recently established and
funded Center for Civic Engagement promotes in
our students a commitment to serve the
community and to participate in civic life and
reflects our institutional understanding of the
relevance and responsibility of a liberal arts
education.
The Provost is expected to lead the faculty
