Description for the Core Course - COR103 - Music and Culture
The appreciation of music is an historical study of cycles, trends, and development of ideas from early civilizations through the 20th century. Music and Culture discusses the basic relationship of the creative process as a means of self-expression and the artist’s relationship to the world. The development of different styles and movements is a direct reflection of humankind’s understanding of self and the world. Besides revolution, there are conflicts of the intellectual versus the emotional aspects that influence various styles and movements. Through examining and questioning various tendencies of development and influences, we draw conclusions about what is of permanent value.

By discovering the role of music in past cultures, we can better understand the role of music in our own culture, and how it affects us and our place in the universe. Through these discoveries, we begin to recognize the worth of each person as an unique human being deserving of respect, and are able to synthesize ways of understanding self and the universe, values and conflicts, and how we choose to live a productive life.

Music and Culture examines primary sources – listening to the music with the aid of selected scores and outlines, viewing selected art, and reading and discussing composers and artists comments about their own works. Each student will be given individual copies of these sources, or reading lists from primary sources on reserve in the library. The use of the WWW and the Internet is encouraged and will be discussed in class.

Grading and Attendance
The student’s final grade will be based on four evaluations worth 25% each, and four listening/viewing assignments. Students will earn final grades of A, B, C, D, F, and may have a plus or minus added to letter grades according to the policy adopted by the faculty. Each student should carefully read the O.U. Honor Code in the 2002-2004 Bulletin, and the NEW O.U. policy concerning the grade of Incomplete: If the student completes the work within thirty days of the last day of exams (of the semester in question), the instructor will evaluate the work and turn in a revised grade.  Any "I" not changed by the professor within forty-five days of the last day of exams will automatically be changed to a grade of  "F."
Students withdrawing from a course may do so through the 9th week, or two weeks after the published mid-semester date with a "W". For two weeks between the 9th and 11th weeks the grade "W" or "WF" may be given at the discretion of the instructor. Students withdrawing after the Friday that falls on the 11th week will receive a grade of "WF". Only in the event of medical emergency or hardship may students appeal a grade of "WF" to the Provost.
Every student, as a member of a team, will participate in two oral presentations during the semester.

REGULAR ATTENDANCE AND PARTICIPATION IS ESSENTIAL TO THE STUDENT’S SUCCESS.
