"The things that I learned while abroad can't be learned in any classroom. How do you analyze an experience like visiting the Royal Palace in Bangkok? You don't - you just grow from it."

Connections to the World
With rapid technological advancements in communication, it's clear that "the global village" is no longer a buzz-phrase, but a turn-of-the-Millennium reality. Chat rooms, satellites, and up-to-the-minute news keep us in touch with distant neighbors oceans away. Oglethorpe University embraces this trend toward intercultural understanding with an innovative International Study Abroad program. A natural companion to Oglethorpe's emphasis on experiential education, Study Abroad allows students to ply the critical thinking skills developed in the Core Curriculum amidst other real-world cultural models.

Students majoring in a foreign language or international studies are required to have a study abroad experience for at least one semester during their 4 years at Oglethorpe.

Students at other colleges often hesitate to study abroad because of expense. However Oglethorpe students can study at one of a number of our International Partner Schools at no additional cost. A semester or year abroad costs the same as studying on the Oglethorpe campus, and scholarship and financial aid transfer to the overseas institutions. Our Study Abroad Office provides access to a number of traditional international study programs as well. Though these opportunities are not guaranteed to cost less than a student's comparable time at Oglethorpe, they remain popular and ensure that Oglethorpe students can study anywhere in the world they desire.

"You gain confidence from being on your own and you're exposed to a new culture and new ideals. This greatly widens your world perspective, which is an excellent addition to a liberal arts degree."
