One of the most fascinating of classic Hollywood genres is what critics have termed the film noir or "dark cinema."  Often based on hard-boiled fiction, these stories of pervasive criminality, misogyny, and the failure of the American dream engaged film viewers in the 40s and 50s. During the last three decades, classic film noir has been revived as neo-noir, spawing the production of a new series of masterpieces. Films studied include: Double Indemnity, Sorry, Wrong Number, Out of the Past, Touch of Evil, Chinatown, Body Heat, and The Last Seduction. Lectures/Discussion/Viewings.
