Now Taking Registrations for SPRING 2012 Classes!

Oglethorpe University is pleased to offer a variety of non-credit language classes. Participation in these courses is open to the general public; enrollment in an Oglethorpe degree program is not required.   Class size is limited.  Non-credit language classes are offered from September - May, and March classes are now accepting registrations. See note on Swedish classes listed below.

Classes Offered March 2012

Winter non-credit language classes will meet March 27 - May 17*.  Class offerings include: French, Greek, Hebrew, Italian, Mandarin Chinese, Spanish, and Swedish*. See below for course descriptions and meeting details.  NOTE:  Swedish meets for 12-weeks, and current classes conclude April 19th.  The next session will begin September 2012.

FRENCH ------ SPEAKING FRENCH I and II
Taught by Rebecca Hayot, an instructor with Oglethorpe University and graduate student from Sorbonne University, Paris.  Taught in an informal and relaxed atmosphere, this class provides an excellent basis for further study in French. No prerequisites.

  • 8 classes, Thursday evenings, 6:30-8 p.m., for French I, Hearst Hall, Room 208, $150
  • 8 classes, Thursday evenings, 8-9:30 p.m., for French II, Hearst Hall, Room 208, $150

GREEK ------ GREEK I
Taught by Georgia Kasidakis, fluent in Greek, Latin American translator, native of Greece. This course will be a conversational approach to Greek language. Designed for beginners, our Greek-for-travel courses can help you become more confident in your upcoming journey. Practice asking for directions, ordering food and making purchases. Taught in an informal and relaxed atmosphere, this class provides an excellent basis for further study in Greek. No prerequisites.

HEBREW

CONVERSATIONAL HEBREW I
Taught by Hana Lapidot, who has taught Hebrew in Israel for 24 years. Unlike Biblical Hebrew, Modern Hebrew is used in daily conversations and contemporary literature. Our course emphasizes conversational Hebrew only. We will learn how to introduce ourselves and others; how to shop in supermarkets and malls; how to order food and how not to get lost. We will also learn how to read and write (from right to left). We will listen to short dialogues/ conversations, enjoy singing and learn some aspects of Israeli culture. Material will be handed out in class.

BIBLICAL HEBREW
Taught by Hana Lapidot, who has taught Hebrew in Israel for 24 years. The purpose of this course is to help the student acquire a basic knowledge of Biblical Hebrew in order to read prose texts. Biblical Hebrew is the ancient Semitic language in which the Torah (the Old Testament) was written. Other texts written in ancient Hebrew are found in several hundred inscriptions, letters, and administrative documents discovered by archaeologists as well as in the Dead Sea scrolls. Biblical Hebrew was used in ancient Israel from about 1000 B.C.E. to roughly the destruction of the second Jewish temple in 70 C.E. No prior work or knowledge in Hebrew is required for this course.

ITALIAN ---- ITALIAN LANGUAGE AND CULTURE I and II and III
Taught by Vincenzo Di Pietro, experienced teacher of Italian business linguistics who also organizes trips to Italy for his students. Designed for beginners, our Italian-for-travel course can help you become more confident in your upcoming journey. Practice asking for directions, ordering food and making purchases. The class also develops cultural fluency by giving you the skills necessary for successful cultural exchanges. Taught in an informal and relaxed atmosphere, this class provides an excellent basis for further study in Italian. No prerequisites.

MANDARIN CHINESE ---- MANDARIN CHINESE I
Taught by Bing Zeng, who holds a Master of Business Administration from Georgia Tech, and an undergraduate degree from the University of Georgia. This course will be a conversational approach to Mandarin Chinese.

  • 6 classes, Thursday evenings, 6:30-8:30 p.m., Hearst Hall, Room 204, $150

SPANISH ---- SPEAKING SPANISH I and II
Spanish I will be taught by Rosita Cunningham, certified Spanish teacher and former Consul of Costa Rica. Spanish II, a continuation of Spanish I, will be taught by Rafael DiCristina, a certified Spanish teacher from Puerto Rico. Want to communicate with Hispanic colleagues? In law enforcement, healthcare, hospitality, construction or landscaping? Work in Latin America? Or perhaps you would like to travel to Spanish speaking countries? This course is for you and your employees. Our conversational approach has you speaking Spanish from day one. It’s practical, fun and effective. We’ll cover grammatical notes and touch on cultural aspects of Spanish-speaking countries, including business etiquette. A workbook and CD will be available from the instructor at the first class ($25, cash or check). No prerequisites.

  • 8 classes, Wednesday evenings, 6:30-8:00 p.m. for Spanish I, Hearst Hall, Room 201, $150
  • 8 classes, Thursday evenings, 6:30-8:00 p.m. for Spanish II, Hearst Hall, Room 201, $150
SWEDISH ---- INTERMEDIATE/ADVANCED SWEDISH - NEXT SESSION:  September 2012
Taught by Dr. Jay Lutz, Professor of Foreign Language with Oglethorpe University. New this Fall:  Swedish classes will be offered at the Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced levels with the classes overlapping for instruction. Additional details on the Beginning class will be added by August of 2012.
  • 12 weeks, Thursday evenings, 7 - 9 p.m for Advanced, and 7:30-9:30 p.m. for Intermediate. It is a joint class from 7:30 - 9 p.m., Hearst Hall, Room 103, $200.   (Current class offering)
