“We have returned from an incredible exploration of Greece: from the islands of Mykonos, Delos, Santorini, Crete, Rhodes and Patmos, to the Peloponese - Corinth, Epidaurus, Delphi, and then back to Athens and Eleusis. Our students did truly remarkable work in perfect weather; they impressed guides, couriers, and the Greek people. Their total of 23 reports and investigations (standing at windy Mycenae, or circled around a column at the Temple of Olympian Zeus) of the ancient Olympic Games, the Parthenon, the mysteries, kouroi, and all the archaeology one could take in five hours a day were truly excellent.

We sailed on the same seas of Odysseus, walked among the stones of the gods, ate moussaka, drank the rich Nemean wine, and danced special birthday dances for two of our students. It is something they will never forget.

Those ancient Greek History and CORE classes paid off. They stood at the theatre of Epidaurus, at Salamis, at the Isthmian Wall, and explored the cave of St. John on Patmos. We sailed upon skiffs, old fisherman boats, and high-tech ferries. You name it, we sailed on it. I have never had such an enthusiastic, humorous and excited group. They simply were the best. From exploring a dozen museums to hiking the volcano at Santorini, they did it with real passion and without complaint. There was little sleep and utter amazement.

Coming back from a walk up to Delphi, one student told me, ‘This could only happen at Oglethorpe... The entire 17 days were the most beautiful and most profound experience of my life.’ He did not have to say a word: it was in his eyes.
