Urban Ecology Program

Oglethorpe University’s Biology Department offers a class on Conservation Ecology every other year. This class covers the rationales and methods for conserving biodiversity in Atlanta and around the globe using field trips, lectures, readings, and discussions.

This Spring’s class just returned from a 4-day field trip to Sapelo Island and the Okefenokee Swamp where they experienced biodiversity and learned about the geology, ecology and history of these unique ecosystems. Highlights from the trip included a walk on pristine Nannygoat Beach to view sea turtle nesting sites, netting and banding migrant songbirds, a walk around R.J. Reynolds mansion, trawling aboard the Spartina for marine organisms and a skiff ride through the swamp to view succession and alligators.
