Pre-Medical Studies Course Information

"By far the biggest advantage of a liberal arts education for a pre-med student is the breadth of the background that one gets. Medical schools are seriously interested in applicants who know more than just science and have the ability and interests to interact effectively with a broad range of people from many different backgrounds."

Dr. Daniel Schadler
Professor of Biology & Health Professions Advisor

The Science of Success
With an exceptional rate of placement into medical schools (over 80% of Pre-Med graduates admitted within 2 years of graduation), preparation for careers in medicine and other health professions continues to be one of Oglethorpe University's most popular and successful areas. Our training environment is both professional and familial, with state-of-the-art equipment and expert professors leading talented student-colleagues in small-class and laboratory environments.

Our program offers a rigorous course of advising and preparation for the MCAT and the medical college admission process. As an added bonus, outstanding internship opportunities with institutions like the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Scottish Rite Children's Hospital, the National Institutes for Health, and Sloan-Kettering Cancer Research Center ensure that Oglethorpe Pre-Med students carry resumes with credentials that are not to be ignored.

"The individual attention really made an impact in deciding what to do after graduation. My professors . took a lot of time helping me in the application process, encouraging me to apply to the more prestigious universities. I think letters of recommendation from professors who really knew me helped me get into these schools."

Advisory Program
Contrary to popular belief, there is no such thing as a "Pre-Med major". Medicine is applied science that hinges upon a subtle understanding of both society and human nature. Therefore simply amassing a record of biology courses is hardly adequate preparation for becoming a physician or other health care professional. Oglethorpe understands this, and has created a highly personalized advisory program designed to acquaint students with both the science and philosophy of healthcare.

Though many major in either biology or chemistry, it's not unusual for a Pre-Med student to choose a major in a disparate field such as English or psychology. This is not discouraged at Oglethorpe, where much value is understood to exist in interdisciplinary study. Our nationally-hailed Core Curriculum provides an outstanding immersion in philosophy and social thought, as well as a special emphasis on the discursive nature of scientific inquiry in the capstone Core course "Science and Human Nature", which is required of all Oglethorpe students. Dr. Daniel Schadler, Oglethorpe's Health Professions Advisor, directly advises each Pre-Med student, helping to create a tailored schedule that accommodates major, Core, and any additional science-related coursework.

Just as Oglethorpe requires applicants to have completed certain courses in high school, medical schools have admission requirements too. Our Pre-Med program is geared with these requirements in mind. It is standard for students to need 4 years to complete them, though some allopathic or osteopathic medical schools, dental schools, or veterinary schools will admit highly qualified applicants who have completed all admission requirements during only 3 years of study at Oglethorpe. Called a Pre-Med Professional Option, it arises by special arrangement between Oglethorpe University and the professional school to which the student is applying. Under this plan, the student receives an undergraduate degree from Oglethorpe University upon achieving a certification of academic good standing at the professional school.
