Urban Ecology Course
Conservation Ecology Field Trip Spring 2009 |

Overview
Cities in the United
States and abroad are growing larger in population size and spatial
extent. This growth often degrades natural resources and creates
inequities in standards of living, quality of education, and
allocation of taxes. Growth management can eliminate or reduce these
impacts, but only if it is based on the interacting facets of
natural and social science that drive urban expansion. To produce
scientists and managers that will effectively manage future urban
growth, schools must offer educational programs that integrate
natural and social sciences. Oglethorpe University's new Urban
Ecology Program offers this interdisciplinary experience in the city
of Atlanta, where outdoor experiments, guest speakers, and internship opportunities abound. Students
completing the program receive a certificate at graduation.
Requirements for the Certificate
To earn a certificate upon graduation from the
university, a student must fulfill four requirements:
- Pass Urban Ecology (cross-listed as UEP 320
and BIO 320) with a grade of "C-" or better. The prerequisite for
this class is COR 102 or permission of the instructor.
- Pass New American City (ULP 303) with a
grade of "C-" or better.
- Successfully complete (A) a 4-credit
off-campus internship acceptable to and supervised by the Program
Director OR (B) an independent study acceptable to the Program
Director. The independent study would require original research,
would be similar to a written honors thesis, and would not require
enrollment in the Honors Program. The study would be supervised by
one member of the campus faculty acceptable to the Program
Director.
- Pass one elective acceptable to the Program
Director with a grade of "C-" or better. Acceptable electives
include but are not limited to: BIO 310 Special Topics in Biology:
Conservation Biology, ECO 428 Special Topics in Economics:
Environmental Economics, ENG 312 Special Topics in Literature and
Culture: Nature, God, and Community in 19th century
literature, and HIS 331 Age of Affluence: the United States since
