Oglethorpe University Institutional Review Board (IRB) Information and Procedures

The Department of Psychology at Oglethorpe University has a strong tradition of student achievement in research. Many students collaborate with faculty on research projects or develop and complete their own research projects with the help of faculty mentors. Each year, Oglethorpe is represented at regional and national psychology conferences by psychology students presenting their original work.

Please read below to find out more about the research interests of the psychology department faculty.

Dr. Justin Wise: A developmental psychologist by training, I am interested in how organic and environmental insults to the brain effect cognitive and linguistic development. I have a particular interest in atypically developing populations, subtyping, the effects of early traumatic brain injury, and the relationship between language and literacy development. My research focuses on identifying the underlying mechanisms that drive the development of key cognitive and linguistic skills necessary for successful academic achievement.

Dr. John Carton: My current areas of interest include providing behavioral and social learning theory explanations for the effects of rewards on intrinsic motivation, examining the role of nonverbal communication in relationships and certain mental illnesses, and identifying antecedents of generalized control expectancies (e.g., locus of control of reinforcement). In addition, I have a growing interest in issues related to psychology and the law, such as the identification of factors that influence jury decisions.

Dr. Leah Zinner: My research addresses the issues of prejudice, stereotyping, and intergroup behavior generally. In particular I am interested in emotions and emotion regulation as it relates to intergroup situations. My research uses a variety of methodologies, including psychophysiological measures, behavioral coding, and self-report. In addition, I am interested in emotion, emotion regulation, and social psychology more generally.
