Orientation FAQ  

Welcome to Oglethorpe! Below is a tentative schedule of the events for orientation and arrival weekend. Oglethorpe University's Orientation program is designed to help you make the transition to college life.  You will be welcomed into the community by representatives from the faculty, staff and student body.  The goal of the program is to make you aware of the wealth of resources at your disposal and to introduce you to the many activities and services available at OU.  While some details may change, this schedule can help you plan your arrival at Oglethorpe.

Please note that attendance at orientation sessions is required of all new students.

Thursday, August 21

9:00am - 11:30am
 
Resident Freshmen Move-In
Residential students report to their assigned residence halls. If you are done early, you and your parents are invited to tour the Weltner Library and the Oglethorpe Museum.
10:00am - 3:00pm One-Stop Shop
Grenwald Room, Emerson Student Center

Pay bills, purchase parking permits, meet with financial aid staff, register for fall classes

11:30am - 12:30pm

Foreign Language Placement Exams
More information to follow.

Noon - 1:30pm Lunch
Cold buffet lunch available in the Schmidt Recreation Center. $5 tickets will be available in residence halls and the Emerson Student Center. Vendors will be in attendance to provide information about bank accounts, cell phones, newspaper delivery, premium Comcast cable services, and gym memberships.
1:30pm - 2:45pm

Parents and Student Life: Expectations
All parents should report to the Lupton Auditorium for a discussion with representatives from Student Affairs.

3:00pm - 3:45pm Fresh Focus Session
All students should report to their Fresh Focus room for their first class session. Parents are invited to meet the instructor and fellow parents.
4:00pm - 5:15pm Convocation
Students proceed to the Conant Center with their Fresh Focus groups and parents.
5:15pm - 7:00pm Dinner
Conant Performing Arts Center Veranda

You and your family, faculty and staff are invited. Tour our newest residence halls. At the conclusion of dinner, parents are requested to say their goodbyes.

7:00pm - 8:00pm First Floor Meetings
Residential students attend their first floor meeting with their Resident Assistant and meet floor mates and other building staff and residents.
8:30pm - Midnight

Friday, August 22

7:30am - 9:00am Breakfast in the Emerson Cafe
9:00am - 12:30pm Center for Civic Engagement Service Activity
Meet in the parking lot adjacent to the baseball field and Dorough Fieldhouse. Wear closed-toe shoes, sunscreen, and loose fitting clothes that CAN get dirty.

All first-year students who participate in the service project will complete 1 of the 4 required CE points. The project is also open to all upperclassmen, faculty, staff, and alumni who would like to participate. We will work with the Grant Park Conservancy on mulching, painting, and general beautification projects. All participants must sign liability waivers and attendance sheets.

10:00am - 4:30pm OUr Atlanta Trip
Meet in the parking lot adjacent to the baseball field and Dorough Fieldhouse. Wear closed-toe shoes, sunscreen, and loose fitting clothes.

The Center is sponsoring a trip to Stone Mountain Park for ALL first year students. A brief history of the area and lunch will be provided. Students will also be given free access to the attractions included in the Adventure Pass (ex. climb the mountain, field sports, play mini golf, ride the railroad, ride to the top of the mountain, Sky Hike and visit the museum). The newest ropes course attraction, Sky Hike, requires closed-toe shoes. All participants must sign liability waivers and attendance sheets. All FIRST-YEAR students who participate in the OUr Atlanta trip will complete 1 of the 4 required CCE points.

1:00pm - 3:00pm International Student Orientation
For all international students only, advising on visa compliance, academic expectations, and getting adjusted to American college life.
1:00pm - 4:00pm Who's Who at OU
Join your Orientation group and meet student affairs staff while learning about available services, required procedures and office locations.
5:00pm - 6:30pm Dinner at Emerson Dining Hall


Monday, August 25

Classes Begin
Late Registration
Dining is on regular semester schedule.
11:30pm -1:00pm Getting Involved: Clubs and Organizations Activities Fair
Various student organizations will be soliciting membership at tables throughout the second floor of the Emerson Student Center. Come find groups that share your talents and interests.
