Applying for Financial Aid

Whether you are seasoned in the financial aid process or are entirely new to the experience, our office is available to answer your questions or to guide you through the process of applying for federal need-based aid.

Summary of the steps to financial aid:

• Apply for admission and be accepted to Oglethorpe.
• Submit the 2010-11 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Be sure to include Oglethorpe's college code, which is 001586. Keep copies of all federal income tax returns, etc., as these documents may be required in order to verify the information provided on the FAFSA.
• If you are a Georgia resident, complete the HOPE and Georgia Tuition Equalization Grant (GTEG) application online at www.gacollege411.org.
• Once the FAFSA has been received and processed by the federal processor, expect to receive your Student Aid Report (SAR) which summarizes the info in your FAFSA. A similar report called the Institutional Student Information Record (ISIR) will be sent to the Oglethorpe financial aid office.
• If selected for FAFSA verification, a) don't worry, as selection is at random and about 30% of students are selected, and b) submit the appropriate forms and tax returns directly to OU.
• Review award package once it arrives, accept in writing the components of the award that you choose, and follow any instructions that correspond with particular items (e.g. an application for work study or a Master Promissory Note for a lender).
• Follow instructions on arranging payment options through the OU Business Office.
  
  

Eligibility requirements for financial aid:

1. Demonstrate financial need (exception: HOPE Scholarship, Georgia Tuition Equalization Grant, Federal Unsubsidized Stafford Loan and Federal PLUS Loan programs).
2. Have a high school diploma or a General Education Development (GED) certificate or pass an independently administered test approved by the U.S. Department of Education.
3. Be enrolled as a regular degree-seeking student in an eligible program.
4. Be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen.
5. Generally, have a social security number.
6. Register with Selective Service, if required.
7. Must not owe a refund on any grant or loan; not be in default on any loan or have made satisfactory arrangements to repay any defaulted loan; and not have borrowed in excess of the loan limits, under Title IV programs, at any institution.
8. Make satisfactory academic progress.
9. May not be a member of a religious community, society or order who by direction of his or her community, society or order is pursuing a course of study at Oglethorpe and who receives support and maintenance from his or her community, society or order.
10. Students must be enrolled at least six hours for the semester after the drop/add period to receive federal and state aid, with the exception of the Georgia Tuition Equalization Grant for which students must be enrolled full-time for the semester.*
    

*Note for Evening Degree Program students:
Financial aid regulations require disbursement of funds on a semester basis. As the Evening Degree Program (EDP) offers two eight-week sessions per semester, EDP students receiving federal financial aid must register for two sessions at a time: Sessions 1 & 2, Sessions 3 & 4, and Sessions 5 & 6.
