Marlena Hollifield has great plans to be an engineer and, naturally, was looking at engineering schools. With her focus on Georgia, her options were clear. Then, Marlena weighed her options. “Should I attend a school where the focus would be science and math, only or a liberal arts school where I could learn to write, read and think critically and then go on to specialize.”
Math and science come easily to Marlena so it would have been easy to go with a specialized program. Instead, Marlena mused, “Once I get my foundation, it will be a lot of fun to go on and do what I’m really interested in, engineering.” It was then that the Dual Degree Program at Oglethorpe University got Marlena’s attention. As she was looking for a Georgia school, Oglethorpe’s location in Atlanta was ideal. Further, the program at OU would enable her to spend three years in OU’s liberal arts program, followed by two more at one of five well-recognized engineering schools in the country with which Oglethorpe is associated.
About her decision, Marlena has no regrets. “I never would have read books like The Odyssey if I were not here. It’s broadened my exposure and my knowledge. I’ve become more flexible and I believe I’ll be more prepared.” She’s looking forward to specializing in mechanical engineering but in the meantime plans to make the most of the opportunity. “This opens my mind, forces me to learn things that I really believe will be beneficial later on.”
Marlena also recommends this path for those who may not get into their choice of engineering schools, “Think of it as a way to broaden your horizons!”
