Whitney Navarro '09

Greetings future Petrels!

My name is Whitney Navarro, and I joined Oglethorpe University first as a student in 2007, and then as the Administrative Assistant to the Vice President for Enrollment and Financial Aid in 2013. I was born in Nashville, Tennessee, and have lived in every state south of Virginia and east of Tennessee. I began my higher education career in 2005 at Saint Andrew’s Presbyterian College in Laurinburg, North Carolina. Here I was an avid equestrian and rode for the IHSA team. At the end of my sophomore year I made a decision that would take me from North Carolina to Atlanta, Georgia. On a trip to downtown Atlanta in the summer of 2007, I passed by Oglethorpe and decided to stop in for a tour. I fell in love with not only the look of OU but the people here as well. I started my junior year at OU in the fall of 2007.

During my academic career at Oglethorpe, I worked in the book store, volunteered with numerous events, interned at Fernbank Museum of History, was a member of the OU tennis team, and rode horses professionally. In May of 2009 I graduated from OU with a major in Communications and Rhetoric Studies and minor in Studio Art. Having such great experiences offered to me through Oglethorpe University, I began my first career at Wesleyan College in Macon, GA as the Head Equestrian Coach and then later ventured into the communications industry with Cox Communications, working in the marketing department.

In my personal life, I am a very active young adult. When not at work I enjoy cooking, being outside, riding horses, participating in races such as Muddy-Buddy and Run for your Lives, playing ball with my dog Ducky, watching TV with my dog Dixie (she sleeps most of the time), and spending time with my husband, Josh.

Favorite spot on campus: The adirondack chairs located underneath the tree next to Hearst Hall on the Academic Quad.
Favorite OU event or tradition: Ringing the 42-Bell Carillon by hand as a senior.
Favorite OU trivia: Oglethorpe had an intramural equestrian program in the late 1940’s with stables located on campus.
Favorite Atlanta hangout: Enjoying the many festivals and activities of Stone Mountain.
Favorite book or movie: Pride and Prejudice, both the book and the movie (2005), although the book is my favorite.
Most interesting place I would like to visit: I would like to cruise the waterways of the Tsars to explore the historical landmarks of Russia such as Moscow’s Kremlin, Red Square, Catherine’s Palace and the Hermitage in St. Petersburg.
