Oglethorpe offers several merit-based scholarships, as well as
information on other scholarships and programs for the traditional
undergraduate student. More information can be found in our
Undergraduate
Financial Aid section.
Oglethorpe University promotes superior potential for academic
and collegiate success by awarding a wide range of merit-based
scholarships to qualified students. Taken into consideration are a
student's high school grade point average, SAT and/or ACT scores and
a host of several other factors. These include leadership qualities,
extracurricular activities, recommendations, relative strength of
high school course schedule and an essay. Please feel free to submit
additional information you believe will communicate your ability to
contribute to the Oglethorpe community. You need not fill out a
separate application for scholarship consideration.
James Edward Oglethorpe Scholarships (JEO) provide tuition
for four years of undergraduate study, if scholarship criteria
continue to be met. Scholars also receive a two-week study abroad
stipend to places such as Italy, Greece and Spain or a mini-semester
in New York City. In addition, JEO scholars may be enrolled in an
honors seminar during the first semester. Should the student be
accepted into the Honors Program the sophomore year and persist,
students will be eligible to apply for a $3,000 research stipend to
complete the senior honor's thesis. Recipients are selected on the
basis of an academic competition held on campus in the winter of
each year. Students must have a combined SAT score of at least 1200
(ACT 25), a 3.5 or higher cumulative grade-point average, and a
superior record of leadership in extracurricular activities either
in school or in the community. For application procedures and
deadlines, contact the Admission Office.
Oglethorpe Scholars Awards (OSA) (including
Presidential Scholarships, Oxford Scholarships, University
Scholarships, and Lanier Scholarships) are based on achievement and
available to entering students with superior academic ability. A
fundamental aim of Oglethorpe University is to prepare students for
leadership roles in society. One way of promoting this purpose is to
give special recognition to students who demonstrate superior
academic abilities as undergraduates. Scholarships range from $4,000
to $15,000.
Recipients of funds from this program are expected to maintain
specified levels of academic achievement and make a significant
contribution to the Oglethorpe community. Each award is for one year
but can be renewed on the basis of an annual evaluation of academic
and other performance factors.
