Spirit of the 60s Lives On
The Spirit of the 60s was alive and well the weekend of May 14-16th
as approximately 45 Petrels and their guests celebrated 40 years since
their graduation from Oglethorpe.
Reunion Chairmen Eric Scharff ’63 was thrilled to see his former
classmates at all the events. The reunion kicked off on Friday night with a
cocktail party in the Great Hall of Hearst. On Saturday, the Alumni
Office offered a guided tour of the campus highlighted by a visit to the
new Archive room in Weltner Library. Archival Librarian, Joanne Yendle,
gave the group a glimpse of the treasures she has uncovered and preserved
from OU history. Saturday evening featured cocktails, dinner and a time to
reminisce about the glorious '60s. Alumni were joined by retired faculty
and staff members Dr. Martha Vardeman and her husband Burt and Elgin
McConnell and his wife Muriel. A keepsake memory book was put
together and distributed during the reunion and excerpts of that book can
be viewed at www.oglethorpe.edu/alumni

The following memories were taken from the
"Spirit of the 60's" Memory
Book
"What a joy it was to receive an education in such an intimate
setting. The student body was diverse, conformity was not highly
esteemed, and the only sure way to bring ridicule upon ourselves was to
appear lacking in an opinion. If nothing else, Oglethorpe graduates were supposed to
know how to THINK! At graduation, I really felt I had accomplished
something worthwhile. For that, I thank O.U."

"Oglethorpe means an entrée to the world through a liberal arts
education that opens portals in the arts, music, classics, literature,
sciences, history, humanities and so much more. My future hopes are that
Oglethorpe not become a “large” university, but stay small so that it can
continue to have the feel of “family” among its staff and students; that
it continue to have an ever-improving reputation among academia and make
contributions to the world by turning out graduates who make a difference
in our society."
Barbara "Bambi" Klein Stewart '64
"Some of my happiest days were at Oglethorpe, and also some of my
proudest. We were the very first college in Atlanta to integrate during
the 60's, and we had the help of Dr. Donald Agnew, and Dean Sewell and
Ralph McGill, editor of the "Atlanta Journal Constitution". I was
President of the Student Council and was asked if we would assist in the
effort. You bet we did! There was no arm twisting; everything was
done on a voluntary basis. Plus, we helped a few thousand people
register to vote."
