Justice Hugh P. Thompson ’66 attended both Oglethorpe
University and Emory University for undergraduate work. He graduated
from Mercer University Law School and began his practice with
Gardner & Peugh. He then went into private practice until 1979.
He served as County Court Judge for Baldwin County from
1973-1978, as Judge of the Superior Courts for Ocmulgee Judicial
Circuit from 1979-1994, and as Chief Judge of the Ocmulgee Judicial
Circuit from 1987-1994. He has served as Justice of the Supreme
Court of Georgia since 1994.
Justice Thompson is a member of the State Bar of Georgia, the
Georgia Bar Foundation, the American Bar Association, the Lawyers
Club of Atlanta, the Old War Horse Lawyers Club, and the Charles
Longstreet Weltner Family Law Inn of Court. He served as President
of the Council of Superior Court Judges from 1993-1994. He received
the Outstanding Alumnus Award from the Mercer University Law School
in 1994. He currently serves as a Justice of the Supreme Court of
Georgia. He and his wife, Jane, have two sons.
