The Boar’s Head Ceremony at Oglethorpe University is inspired by the Coat of Arms of the family of James Edward Oglethorpe.  Three profile views of the head of a ferocious beast are depicted, representing the strength, courage and vigor of the Oglethorpe family.  More broadly, the feast of the Boar’s Head has been a traditional celebration at English colleges that marks the beginning of the holiday season.  This evening’s ceremony is derived, therefore, from an awareness of English collegiate heritage and our continuing admiration for the qualities of leadership, valor and vision exemplified by General Oglethorpe.

This year’s program includes the Boar’s Head Processional, the introduction of new members of Omicron Delta Kappa, a national leadership society, and a Holiday Concert.  Concert selections will include many traditional holiday carols and a variety of lesser-known tunes of various origins.  As tradition dictates, following the ceremony, you will be able to watch the initiates of Omicron Delta Kappa kiss the namesake Boar’s Head and enjoy a festive reception in the CPAC Lobby and Auditorium.
