View the Oglethorpe University Calendar for schedule information. The
Miriam H. and John A. Conant Performing Arts Center, completed in
1997, is a four-story state-of-the-art theatrical and performance
facility providing a permanent home to Oglethorpe University's
Theatre Department and the Georgia Shakespeare Festival. It houses a
mainstage theatre with seating for 511, an expansive lobby, a snack
bar, a gift shop, rehearsal and dressing rooms, a scene dock, a
small library, a covered veranda for receptions, and administrative
offices. Expansion plans include the addition of an enclosed scene
shop, costume shop and storage.
The Conant Center is the product of a joint venture by Oglethorpe
University and the Georgia Shakespeare Festival to bring more
artistic and educational opportunities to the Oglethorpe student
body and the Atlanta community. In support of this directive, the
Conant Center has hosted such guests as the Berlin Chamber
Orchestra, the Atlanta Chamber Players, musical artists Sukay,
international pianist Enrique Graf, and Atlanta's own GardenHouse
Dance. Other recent Conant Center events include the Eco-Symposium
with keynote speaker Ted Turner, a discussion with NPR personality
David Broncaccio, and An International Summit on Europe featuring
former U.S. Secretaries of State Alexander Haig and Lawrence
Eagleburger. Previous seasons have also seen mezzo-soprano Brenda Boozer,
the conference Women in the Civil Rights Movement, the Michael
O'Neal Chamber Singers, and acclaimed performance artist Kate
Bornstein, among others.
