The 2002-2003 season marked the end
of the storied career of forward Heather Francoeur. Her sophomore
year she led the Petrels
in scoring averaging 19.0 ppg and was named
second team all SCAC. In 2001-2002 she broke the 1000 point mark in
the fewest games in SCAC history. She was named first team SCAC, All
South First Team and one of 10 finalists for the Jostens Trophy
given to the top DIII basketball player in the nation. In her senior
year she
set
the SCAC all time scoring record—men’s and women’s—and finish second
in the nation in scoring averaging 22.7ppg. For her career, she
rewrote the Oglethorpe record books. Francoeur is the career leader
in total points (1793), scoring average (19.7ppg), total rebounds
(769), rebounding average (8.45rpg) and third in field goal
percentage (47%) and free throw percentage (76%). To cap off her
career she was named SCAC player of the year, All South First team,
Regional All American, finalist for the Jostens Trophy and was
featured in Sports Illustrated’s Faces in the Crowd. Heather
Francoeur will be dearly missed, as much for her strong leadership
and kind heart as for her scoring and rebounding.
