Oglethorpe Edged in 6 Hole Playoff
Emory makes up 5 strokes in final round to force playoff.
The Oglethorpe University men's golf team, which entered the season
as Golf Weekly's Preseason #1 ranked Division III team, lost a six
hole playoff to crosstown rival Emory and finished in second place
at the Rhodes College Fall Invitational at the Tunica Resorts in
Mississippi.
Emory forced the playoff by gaining five strokes on the Petrels on
the second day of the tournament. The final round of golf lasted
four and a half hours for the twelve teams competing in the field.
Settling the championship between Emory and Oglethorpe in the
playoff, however, took an additional four hours in a compelling
battle of two top teams.
The six hole playoff between Oglethorpe and E mory took many twists
and turns with both teams squandering opportunities to close the
other out. The Eagles were finally able to claim the victory on the
par 3 sixth playoff hole by recording four pars and a bogey.
The Petrels placed three players in the tournament's top ten with
Taylor Urbanski (2nd), Danny Swanick (3rd) and freshman David
Dilibero (7th).
The Oglethorpe men's golf team and their lofty national ranking will
travel to Greensboro, North Carolina on October 1st, 2nd and 3rd for
the next event.
