Men Earn Preseason #1 Honors
Golfweek magazine has ranked the Oglethorpe University Stormy
Petrels men’s golf team preseason #1 in their first national poll of
the season. Oglethorpe returns four players who played extensively
in the line up last year including two-time All American, senior
Danny Swanick. Swanick in his fourth year from Tampa, Florida
finished fourth individually at last year’s NCAA Division III
National Championship at Firethorn Golf Club in Lincoln, Nebraska.
He will be joined by sophomore Joseph Lyda a sophomore from
Albertville, AL. Lyda was on the National Freshman of the Year
team last year and finished third team All American at the NCAA
Championship.
They are joined by a pair of juniors who finished first
individually in three tournaments between them last year.
Taylor Urbanski, a Parkview HS graduate from Stone Mountain,
GA won twice last year, finishing first at Cross Creek
Plantation in Seneca, SC and again at Callaway Gardens in
March on the beautiful Mountain View Course.
Junior Matt Suggett, who comes to Oglethorpe from England,
tied Taylor for first at the Cross Creek Plantation in
October last year had two top five finishes before two
injuries sidelined him for the spring season last year.
An excellent recruiting class including Scott Pugh
from Harrisburg, PA; Michael Hicks from Birmingham,
AL; David Dilibero from Gainesville, Florida and Chad
Andrews from Cairo, GA have the Stormy Petrels looking
to better their 4 th place NCAA National
finish last year. Last year’s fourth place finish was
the seventh consecutive top 12 finish by the men’s
program. The Division III NCAA National Championship
will be hosted on the outskirts of Indianapolis, IN
this May.
This year the Southern Collegiate Athletic
Conference Championship will be hosted just
outside of Austin, Texas and Oglethorpe will look
to defend their championship won in Winchester, TN
last year and win their seventh SCAC championship
in the last nine years. Head Coach Jim Owen,
begins his 25th year at Oglethorpe has
won seven consecutive SCAC Conference Coach of the
Year awards and eight of the last nine honors
