Women's Golf Records Early Success
First at Sewanee, Third at Piedmont
The Oglethorpe University women's golf team is poised to make a
climb in the national rankings and if the way they began their
season is any indication, they'll be making plenty of noise soon.
In two competitions so far this season, the Petrels have recorded
first and third place finishes.
In their first action of the 2006 fall season, the Oglethorpe
women's golf team started with a bang by winning the Sewanee
Fall Classic at Bear Trace in Winchester, TN. The Fall Classic
saw three teams compete in the one day event. They finished on
top with a 337.
Second place went to Piedmont College with a 358 and the
host school, Sew anee, finished with a 401.
Individually, the Petrels had all six golfers finish in
the top ten. Senior Julia Gates and sophomore Paige
McCollum finished tied for first with Gates winning the
medalist honors by way of a tie-breaker. Both Gates and
McCollum shot an 83 for the day.
Other top ten finishers were a fifth place finish by
freshman Katie Dale and a sixth place finish for
sophomore Carrie Shirah. Freshman Trascen Hinz (pictured, right) and
junior Jessica Bonham rounded out the Stormy Petrel
scoring with a 93 and 97 respectively.
The women were back in action one week later
to compete in the Piedmont College Fall
Classic in Rutledge, GA at The Creek at Hard
Labor Golf Course. The Petrels got off to a
slow start by shooting at team score of 352
the first day of the event and trailed a
Shorter College team who shot an opening day
low round of 339.
The first day saw sophomore Paige McCollum shoot
a team leading 83. That score was good for 4th
place heading into Monday's round. Carrie
Shirah also recorded a top-ten finish following
Day One.
The women improved to shoot a 343 on Day Two but
could not catch the ultimate tournament winner,
Shorter. Paige McCollum garnered a third place
overall finish with a total score of 166. This
score also got her named to the All -Tournament
Team. Carrie Shirah finished in sixth place
with a total of 172 and junior Julia Gates
finished in tenth with a two day total of 174.
The women's golf team will be back in action
competing in the DePauw Small College Classic
October 1st and 2nd at the Deer Creek Golf Club
in Clayton, Indiana.
