Petrels Storm into NCAA Tournament for 1st Time in School History
February 27, 2006

The University of Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels women's basketball team learned late Sunday night that they would be playing in the Division III NCAA Basketball Tournament for the first time in school history. After posting their best record (21-6) in 16 seasons of competition, the NCAA committee rewarded the Petrels with an invitation to the Division III version of the "Big Dance."

Oglethorpe will play at Maryville College on Wednesday night at 7pm in Maryville, Tennessee.

The Petrels and the Scots squared off earlier in the season with Oglethorpe coming away with an 89 - 78 victory in Dorough Field House in Atlanta.

After winning only 12 games a season ago, Oglethorpe has turned things around with a stellar freshman class that includes four of the top five scorers on the team.

The Petrels are paced by freshman sensation Katie Kulavic and her 17.3 points per game. Anna Findley (12.4 ppg), Biz Richmann (11.0 ppg), and Hannah Brooks (6.7 ppg) round out the most productive first-year class in Oglethorpe history. Junior Erin Flynn (13.0 ppg) provides the team with veteran leadership for head coach Ron Sattele.

The winner of Wednesday's contest will travel to Greencastle, Indiana to face DePauw University (27-1) on Saturday.

Women Crack Top 25 for 1st Time in School History
January 10, 2006

After starting their season with 12 wins and only one loss to a Division I school, the Oglethorpe University women's basketball team has been rewarded with their first Division III national ranking ever. The Petrels entered the D3hoops.com Top 25 ranked at number 24 overall, quite an accomplishment for a team that was picked to finish ninth in its own league in the preseason.

The weekly D3hoops.com Top 25 is voted on by a panel of 25 coaches, Sports Information Directors and media members from across the country.

After entering the poll for the first time in school history on the strength of nine straight wins, the Petrels will have to fight hard to stay there. The team travels to Texas this weekend for a traditionally tough two games against conference stalwarts Southwestern and Trinity.

Basketball Coach Previews the 2004-2005 Women's Basketball Team
Tentatively, there could be up to 12 new players joining Oglethorpe University women's basketball this season. Head coach Ron Sattele said that adding so many incoming student athletes to the returning players could be positive for the team.

Seven Lady Petrels on the SCAC Honor Roll

The SCAC announced the Student Athlete Academic Honor Roll for the spring semester. Of the 47 Oglethorpe athletes honored, seven were members of the women's basketball team. The seven women's basketball honorees were: Alyson Adkisson, Nichole Gilleland, Julie Colantoni, Katie Michalczyk, Laine Bradshaw, Stefie Jo Janssen and Hannah York. Through hard work on the court and in the class room, these young women epitomize the term student-athlete.

"I am very proud of these young women for devoting so much time to their studies. It is great to see them recognized for their excelling in the classroom as well as excelling on the basketball court," said Coach Sattele.

To qualify for the SCAC honor roll a student must have a GPA of 3.25 or higher and be a regular member of a varsity sport.

Nichole, a 5'5 left hander, needed ten points to reach the plateau and hit a jumper near the end of the 1st half to become the third Stormy Petrel Women's basketball player to score 1000 points.  She joins the SCAC all time 1000 point scorers with her total of 1,059 points, 27th in SCAC history.
