OU Harriers Open Season at Sewanee Invitational
Oglethorpe’s men and women began 2006’s competition on the Sewanee
Golf Course Saturday morning, September 2nd. Both squads entered
their respective races with only one member of their team having run
collegiate cross country last year. For four of the five men it was
their first experience at the 8 kilometer distance (4.98 miles).
The women ran first and were led by Gillian Brady. The junior
captain from Seton Catholic in upstate New York completed the 5k
course in 22:21, her fastest time on the oft-used Sewanee course.
Freshman Avery Livingston, from LaGrange High School, finished
second for the women in 23:36. Juniors Ashley Smith, Debbie Lubbe
and Wendy Madill rounded out the scoring for the women. Freshman
Logan Johnson, sophomore Brandy Rich and junior Lydia Hofstetter
competed in their first collegiate race.
Only four Oglethorpe men finished the grueling 8k course as
the sun which had been hidden behind the customary fog which
covers Monteagle blazed through to heat the race. Sophomore
captain Ryan Fulgham raced freshman teammate Aaron Connolly to
the finish line, both clocked in 36:02. Freshman Evan Price
followed not far behind in 36:58. Senior Kyle Taylor ran his
first cross country race finishing in what should have been a
5 th scoring position for the team. (Five runners
from a school must finish to post a team score.)
Unfortunately, freshman Enrique Sanchez, who was running
with the leaders took a wrong turn as he neared the finish
area in the confusion of the gathered spectators who
crowded the area overlooking the finish. His miscue
removed him from the proper sequence and his finished went
unrecorded.
Both squads return to action next Saturday, September
9th on the difficult Mercer Atlanta cross
country course.
