Petrel Harriers Open 2008 Season

September 9, 2008
Oglethorpe’s men’s and women’s cross country teams both finished 13th among the 18 schools entered in the races at the University of the South Invitational on Saturday.  Running over the Sewanee course in heavy fog, the women bettered their last performance there (2006) by slicing more than a minute off each scorer’s time for the 5k.

Leading the Petrels were captain Avery Livingston, a junior, and freshman Beth Cleary, finishing the race in 23:14 and 23:15. The scoring was rounded out by sophomore Michelle Chelemer and freshmen Bianca Hernould  and Annie Morgan.

In the men’s race, captain Enrique Sanchez recorded his fastest 8k, finishing 24th in 27:17. Ten of the runners finishing ahead of him were Division I runners from Mississippi State and the University of Evansville.  The other men scoring for OU were sophomore Luis Zimbron, freshman Matt Bryant, sophomore Que Newbill and freshman Matt Paden.

The teams’ next race will be at the LaGrange College Invitational on Saturday, September 20th.

Junior Enrique Sanchez became only the third Oglethorpe cross country runner to break 27:00 for the 8 kilometer race distance on Saturday at the Mercer University Invitational.

Sophomore Luis Zimbron moved to the 11th best all-time performance with his finish of 28:37.  The 2008 men’s team contains three of the 30 best- time performers.

On the women’s side, freshman Beth Cleary moved up to the 15th best time recorded by an Oglethorpe woman by finishing the 5 kilometer Macon course in 21:47.  Teammate Avery Livingston joins Cleary on the Top-30 list but is currently sidelined with a foot injury.  The teams travel to Monteagle, Tennessee for the second meet of the season at the University of the South on Friday.

Sanchez Earns All-Conference at SCAC Championships
November 2, 2008

Enrique Sanchez, junior captain of the men’s cross country team, earned All-Conference honors Saturday at the SCAC cross country championships in Memphis.  Sanchez helped the Petrels improve over last year’s finish.  Oglethorpe moved ahead of Millsaps for the first time in four years and finished only 27 points out of 7th place in the highly touted meet.  No less than half the teams competing entered the meet ranked in the top ten of their region.  At least four of those teams will likely advance to the NCAA finals.  Following Sanchez were sophomores Luis Zimbron and Que Newbill and freshmen Matthew Bryant and Matt Paden.

In the women’s race, freshman Beth Cleary moved higher on the 30 fastest times ever run by an Oglethorpe woman with her finish.  Cleary was followed by sophomores Michelle Chelemer, and Julia Higgins and freshmen Bianca Hernould, Lauren Hunt and Armanda Colson.  The women’s championship also featured nationally ranked teams.  The SCAC meet concludes the 2008 cross country season for the Petrels.  Athletes await the start of the Indoor Track & Field season which begins in January.
