Cross Country Concludes Season at NCAA Regional Championships
November 15, 2009
Oglethorpe closed the curtain on its 2009 cross country season on the rain-soaked muddied course over the Guilford College campus in Greensboro, North Carolina on Saturday afternoon. The weather by race time was beautiful – if not overly warm. But the day’s dawning had done little to dry out the hurricane-scarred race course.
Thirty-six colleges from the South/Southeast Region, which stretches from Virginia to Texas, sent team representatives to compete in the women’s 6k championship. Despite sidelining OU’s number one runner with injury, the women’s team managed to finish 27th. Leading the scoring for Oglethorpe was senior co-captain Avery Livingston. She was followed by Sherry Blystone, Michelle Chelemer, Sarah Foster and Bekky Strom.
In the men’s 8k championship thirty schools entered contestants. Oglethorpe’s men finished 22nd. Senior co-captain Enrique Sanchez led the team – as he has for four years – and sadly missed All-Region by one second. He was followed by co-captain Luis Zimbron, Jay Russell, Ellis Jones, Sean Lovett and Alex Van Zandt.
Other than Livingston and Sanchez, Jay Russell is the only senior on the 2009 squad.
Oglethorpe Hosts Annual Stormy Petrel Classic
October 17, 2009
The busy Oglethorpe campus served up its annual cross country classic today. Ten women’s teams and nine men’s teams traversed the surprisingly challenging race course. A favorite of many runners, the course features narrow, winding woods trail with unexpected hills and long gradual climbs from the back of the campus to the academic quadrangle where the races start and finish.
The University of West Georgia won both the men’s8k and the women’s 5k. Oglethorpe’s men were 6th of nine teams entered while the OU women finished 6th of 10 teams entered.
For the men, Enrique Sanchez led the way finishing 6th place overall in a time of 28:41. He was followed by Luis Zimbron, Ellis Jones, Sean Lovett, Alex Van Zandt, Tony Golden, Tim Tanko and Brandon Morse. For the women, Beth Cleary led finishing 12th overall in a time of 21:28. She was followed by Bekky Strom, Avery Livingston, Sarah Foster, Michelle Chelemer, Sherry Blystone, Bianca Hernould, April Tolley, Chelsea Couch and Bethany Booth.

Oglethorpe Cross Country Opens 2009 Season September 11, 2009
Senior Enrique Sanchez began the 2009 cross country season in much the same way he finished the 2008 racing season – fast. Sanchez finished 21st out of 174 runners at Berry’s Clara Bowl Cross Country Invitational. Sanchez covered the 8k course at Mt. Berry in 27:15 and was the first NCAA D-III finisher in the race. Sophomore Luis Zimbron finished in 29:24. Freshmen Wes Edmondson and Tim Tanko also ran well for the Flying Petrels.
In the women’s 5k sophomore Beth Cleary finished in the top third of a huge race and led the Lady Petrels to a 15th place finish out of 20 teams. Freshman Bekky Cleary and Sarah Foster finished second and third for the team, senior Avery Livingston finished fourth and sophomore Bianca Hernould rounded out the team’s scoring (first five finishers). Also performing well were junior Michelle Chelemer and freshmen April Tolley and Bethany Booth.
The squads will next compete on Saturday, September 19th at the UGA Invitational in Athens. The Men’s 8000 meter race is scheduled for 8:00 AM and the Women’s 5000 meter race is slated to start at 8:45 AM.
