Oglethorpe University Cross Country Season Preview for 2007

With the addition of ten new runners joining  the veterans from last fall, both the men’s and women’s cross country teams look to improve their standing in the highly competitive SCAC (Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference).  The conference sent the lone two qualifying teams from the South Region to the NCAA National Finals last year.  An additional member of the SCAC qualified for the NCAA National Championship in the Great Lakes Region.

Oglethorpe’s men are captained by junior Ryan Fulgham, who began his running career at Northgate High School.   Talented sophomore Enrique Sanchez (81st in the 2007 Peachtree 10k Road Race out of 55,000 runners) appears to be the early season front-runner.  They will be joined by first year team members: John Burke, Zach Hamilton, and Que Newbill from Georgia, transfer Stephen Zellner from Alabama, and Christian Rethmeier and Robert Galletto, Rotary students from Germany.

Senior, three-year letter-winner and 2006 MVP, Gillian Brady and sophomore, Avery Livingston, from LaGrange, Georgia co-captain the women’s squad.  They are joined by returnees: Deborah Lubbe, Wendy Madill, Brandy Rich and Lydia Hofstetter.  In addition, Michelle Chelemer, from Raleigh, North Carolina and Donyale Greenwell, Brittany Nesmith, Chloey Mayo, and Larisa Ozeryansky, all of Georgia, will be making  their debut with the Stormy Petrels.

The harriers will open their 2007 season at the Mercer Invitational in Atlanta on Saturday, September 8th.   They will compete at the Georgia State University, Atlanta University, and Chattahoochee Tech invitationals , and the Georgia Collegiate Championships, as well as at home in the annual Stormy Petrel Fall Classic on Saturday, September 22 before traveling to Georgetown, Texas to run on host Southwestern’s cross country course in the SCAC Championships on October 27th.
