Petrels Place 4th at NCAA's, Bring Home Individual Hardware's
The Oglethorpe University men's golf team battled to a fourth place
finish at the NCAA Division III Championships in Lincoln, Nebraska
last week. Though the team was unable to capture the overall
championship which went to host school Nebraska Wesleyan, the
Petrels did manage to snare a host of individual honors.
Junior Danny Swanick shot a four day total of 296 (+12) to finish
fourth overall at the Championships and earned himself a spot on the
PING First-Team All-America squad. Danny was one of only ten golfers
in the entire nation to garner this first-team distinction.
Freshman sensation Joseph Lyda compiled
a four day total of 304
(+20) to finish in a tie for 22nd overall and a berth on the PING
Third-Team All-American squad. Joseph's incredible performance
also secured him a spot on the All-Freshman Team for the South
Region. With only six regions reporting, Lyda has easily placed
himself in the top ten in Division III for his class year.
Senior Joe Green finshed alone in 31st place with a total of 306
(+22) and missed being named to the PING Third-Team All-American
squad by only two strokes. Despite the narrow miss, Joe's
accomplishments throughout a dazzling senior season earned him a
nomination to the PING All-South Region Team.
Joining Green on the PING All-South Region team was sophomore
Taylor Urbanski, who, despite entering the final day of
competition in 90th place, managed to climb up 30 spots to finish
in a tie for 60th. Taylor will return next season for a talented
Petrel team that will be aiming high in 2006-2007.
