Petrels Battle Through Round One of NCAA Championships
For the ninth straight year the Oglethorpe University men's golf team teed off at the NCAA Golf Championships today in Round One action. The Petrels shot a team 13-over 301 on the tougher Dye course to hold down a tie for 17th place after day one.
Despite being back in 17th place, Oglethorpe's 301 was only bettered by five other schools who competed on the Dye Course today. The University of Texas at Tyler posted a 3-over 291 to represent the best score on that course.
Meanwhile, on the more forgiving Ryder course, national number one and tournament host Methodist University posted a staggering 9-under par 279 to hold a 10 stroke advantage over defending national champ St. John's University (Minnesota). Eight of the top ten scores from today's round were recorded on the Ryder Course.
The Petrels were led by the steady play of senior Hap Kaufold who posted an even par round of 72 which puts him in a tie for 23rd place overall. Junior Scott Pugh shot a 2-over 74 to hold in a tie for 44th place while sophomore Olafur Loftsson carded a 3-over 75 to be in a tie for 53rd place. Freshmen Colin Chapman and Matt Bernstein struggled a bit in their first NCAA Tournament appearances, each scoring an 8-over par 80 on the afternoon.
Oglethorpe will tee off for Round Two action at 8:40 a.m. tomorrow on the Ryder course looking to make a move on the field. To follow the live updating leaderboard, look for the NCAA D-III Championship box on the Golfstat homepage here.
