Men Take Third Place at Emory Spring Invitational

The Oglethorpe University men's golf team finished in third place among twelve competing teams at the 2009 Emory Spring Invitational held on Tuesday. The No. 4 ranked Petrels were only bested by national No.'s 1 and 2 teams, Huntingdon and Methodist respectively.

The teams were forced to play 36 holes in one day after Monday's scheduled round was wiped out by the rain. The Petrels completed the first 18 only seven strokes back of Huntingdon but could not make up any ground in the second 18 and ultimately finished 18 strokes behind the nation's number one team.

Oglethorpe junior Scott Pugh fired rounds of 71 - 73 to finish at four over par and claim fifth place individually. Freshmen Matt Bernstein and Colin Chapman finished in 14th and 16th places respectively with Bernstein posting 10 over par and Chapman coming in at 11 over par. Sophomore Olafur Loftsson struggled in Round Two, posting a 79 on his way to finishing in a tie for 24th place at 13 over par and freshman Craig Stevenson tied for 30th place at 15 over par.

Among the 12 teams there were 78 golfers competing for the medalist honors that were taken home by Methodist's Jake Pleczkowski at 3 under par.
