Men Claim #1 National Ranking for 1st Time in School History

The Oglethorpe University men’s golf team has claimed the school’s first-ever number one national ranking as determined by the final Golf World/Nike Golf Division III Coaches’ Poll of the fall season. The Stormy Petrels collected seven of fourteen first-place votes to finish tied for the top spot with Methodist University with 342 overall points.

The Petrels are led by eight-time Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Coach-of-the-Year, Jim Owen and senior Academic and Athletic First Team All-American Taylor Urbanski from Loganville. Oglethorpe has placed in the top five in each of the past four Division III National Championships including last year’s fifth place finish at The Prarie View Golf Club in Fishers, Indiana.

With the jump in the rankings, Oglethorpe is celebrating its first trip to the top spot in a national poll voted on by coaches. The Golf World/Nike Golf Division III Coaches’ Poll combines the resources of Golf World magazine, Nike Golf and the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA).

Oglethorpe played five fall events, winning two: the Tom O’Briant Memorial and The Gordin Collegiate Classic. The Petrels also recorded two third place finishes at the Rhodes Fall Classic and the Greensboro College Fall Invitational. In the final event of the fall season, Oglethorpe finished second as tournament hosts of the Oglethorpe/Royal Lakes Fall Classic.
