Erb Named Nicklaus Award Winner for 2004
Trent Erb was named the winner of the Jack Nicklaus Award given to
the Player of the Year in NCAA Division III. Erb’s third place
finish at the NCAA National Tournament coming on the heels of this
second consecutive SCAC Individual Championship sealed the honor for

Stormy Petrels Finish Ninth at NCAA National Tournament in
Redlands, Calif.
The Oglethorpe University Petrels finished the first round in ninth
place on the 7,005-yard Golf Club at Oak Valley. In round two,
Oglethorpe had the day’s second best round of 297, behind
eventual-National Champion Gustavus Adolphus’ even par 288. The
round was highlighted by an even par 72 from All-American Trent Erb,
74 from Corey Garner, and rounds 75 and 76 from Joe Green and Danny
Swanick respectively. The Petrels moved into a tie for sixth place
after day two. Rounds of 306 and 303 moved Oglethorpe into ninth
place after the final round. The ninth place finish marked the third
consecutive top ten finish by the Stormy Petrels and the fifth
consecutive trip to the National Championship by the team or an

Garner and Erb Named Academic All-Americans
San Bernandino, Calif. – Junior Corey Garner earned his first
Academic All-American Award at the NCAA banquet in May at the
National Tournament in San Bernandino, Calif. Garner has been named
Academic All-SCAC three years in a row. To earn Academic
All-American, a player must be in his junior or senior year. Senior
Trent Erb was honored with his second Academic All-American Award.

Erb Named First Team All-American; Green Named Second Team
All-American
Trent Erb fired rounds of 74, 72, 72 and 71 for a one-over-par 289
en route to a third place individual finish at the PGA of Southern
California Course at Oak Valley. Erb earned first team All-American
honors. Sophomore Joe Green totaled rounds of 73, 75, 74, 72 for a

Erb SCAC Player of the Year for Second Time
For the second year in a row, Trent Erb was named Southern
Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year for his win at the
SCAC Championship at the Renaissance PineIsle, Lake Lanier, Ga. Erb
won on the first playoff hole, which was the 18th. Erb joins 1998
Oglethorpe University graduate Tolliver Williams as a two-time SCAC
Player of the Year. Williams’ and Erb’s Player of the Year Awards
combined with one each from Robert Fink and Chris Summers give the
Stormy Petrels six of the last eight honorees. Please visit

Oglethorpe Set to Host NCAA Nationals in 2005
The NCAA chose Oglethorpe University in partnership with the
Central Florida Sports Commission to host its 2005 NCAA Men’s
Division III National Championship at the Mission Inn Resort near
Orlando, Fla. The Mission Inn Resort, located 45 minutes northwest
of Orlando in Howey-In-The-Hills, Fla., has hosted nine consecutive
NCAA regional or national tournaments. The 2005 NCAA Division III
National Championship will mark their 10th consecutive NCAA event.

Petrels Place Five on SCAC All-Academic Team
The Oglethorpe Men’s Golf team placed five of its nine members
on the SCAC All-Academic Team for the 2004 season. Senior Trent Erb,
a two-time Academic All-American, was joined on the SCAC team by
junior Brian Norman, sophomore Jonathan Davis, and freshmen Travis
Palladino and Grayson Briggs. Seven of the nine team members had
GPAs over 3.0 for the spring semester. The team sported a 3.1
cumulative GPA for the 2004 spring semester. The SCAC guidelines for
earning Academic All-Conference include maintaining a 3.25 GPA for
the spring semester.
Trent Erb Named to U.S. Team for United States – Japan Cup
Matches
The Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) named Trent Erb
to the U.S. team for the 2004 Fuji Xerox United States vs. Japan
Collegiate Golf Championship held in July. The 12-member squad
consisted of eight men and four women collegiate players.
Erb, a senior from Athens, Ga., was the two-time Southern
Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year and was a 2003
Division III PING All-America selection. The only NCAA Division III
player selected for the Team USA, Erb represented his division in
the United States vs. Japan matches.

Oglethorpe in Japan. What better way to cap off my collegiate golf
career and senior year at Oglethorpe than with this experience."

Erb Leads Nation in Greens Hit in Regulation
Senior Trent Erb, Athens, Ga., hit an incredible .699 percent of
greens in regulation (GIR) this past season. His .699 GIR pct
translates to just under 13 of 18 greens hit per day. Erb easily led
Division III players in GIR and ranks 23rd nationally in GIR when
All Divisions (I, II and III) are compared together. Erb also led
Division III in par 4 scoring at 4.07, scoring average at 72.27 and
score compared to par at .67 (over par). He finished second
nationally in five more categories including: subpar strokes per
round at 3.25 per round; most birdies with 81; par 5 scoring at
4.68; fewest bogeys per round with 3.14 per day; and the lowest
round with a 64.
Erb Sets More Than a Dozen School Records
Capping off a great season with first team All-American Honors
and the Nicklaus Award as the NCAA Division III Player of the Year,
senior Trent Erb went on to set and reset more than a dozen school
records this past season. Some of the outstanding highlights
include: lowest round of 64;, 72.27 scoring average; .699 GIR; 4.68
par 5 scoring; par 3 GIR of .592; most birdies 79; and par 4 scoring
at 4.07.
Garner Finishes Second in Fairways Hit at .677
Junior Corey Garner hit .677 percent of fairways to finish
second in the nation. It was the third consecutive year Garner
finished in the top 10 in fairways hit. Sophomore Joe Green at .663
finished sixth nationally followed by Erb at .657 in seventh. For a

Owen Named Coach of the Year in SCAC for 2004 -- Sixth Award
in Seven Years for Owen and Staff
Oglethorpe coach Jim Owen won his sixth overall SCAC Coach of
the Year honor and fifth in a row this past May. Owen won his first
award in 1998 and then won consecutively in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003
and 2004. Assistant Coach Robert Fink won his second consecutive
Coach of the Year Award for his outstanding work with the team. He
joined the Deloitte and Touche accounting firm in September. Mike
Deckert joined Owen for the three prior SCAC Coach of the Year
