Stormy Petrel’s 2nd at “The
Cardinal”

The Oglethorpe University men’s golf team tied a school record
for best score at the Cardinal Country Club in Greensboro, NC with a
closing round of eight over par 288. The record-tying round came on
a difficult par 70 layout and almost helped the Petrels catch
nine-time Division III national champ Methodist College for the
tournament victory. When the smoke cleared, however, Oglethorpe
wound up a mere four strokes back and conceded to Methodist, 581 –
585. Though they weren’t able to catch Methodist, the Petrels bested
sixteen other squads in finishing second including seven teams
ranked in the Bridgestone / GCAA Division III top – 25.
Oglethorpe began the tournament with an opening round 297 which
was good enough for fifth place overall, nine strokes off the pace
set by Methodist. The Petrels began the final round with
determination and began shaving strokes off the defending champion’s
lead. Indicative of Oglethorpe’s sharp play was the statistic that
the Petrels team played the last ten holes at one over par
collectively. Said head coach Jim Owen, "Playing forty holes in one
over par as a team is exceptional on any course…doing it at The
Cardinal in the wind we played with today was nothing short of
amazing."
Senior Joe Green carded a personal best and school record one
under par 69 at The Cardinal. By doing so, Joe became the first
player in Oglethorpe history to shoot under par at the course The
final round 69 also moved Green into second place individually for
the tournament, two strokes behind Cardinal medalist Cory Schneider
of Methodist.
Freshman Joseph Lyda finished one shot behind Green individually
and fourth overall. His performance tied the second best in school
history in tournament play, matching Robert Fink’s 143 total in
2001. Lyda accomplished this feat by playing his last ten holes at
four under par.
Sophomore Taylor Urbanski posted rounds of 75 – 74 for a 149
total and tied for a 26th place finish. Another freshman, Joshua
Kinsey, totaled 151 and tied for a 32nd place finish in his first
ever tournament appearance for Oglethorpe.
The Stormy Petrels travel to the Greensboro Collegiate
Invitational from October 8 – 11 for their next competitive event.
