SOLID FALL SEASON FOR OU MEN’S GOLF

Petrels ranked 6th in Coaches Poll; 10th in Golfstat poll after Fall Season

Tournament Summary

Oglethorpe’s men’s golf team won one tournament, finished second in another and finished 6th and 11th in their final two events of the fall.  The season began in Atlanta in mid September at the fabulous PineIsle Resort on Lake Lanier.  Oglethorpe edged Emory University in a 27 hole rain shortened tournament.  Senior Trent Erb won medalist honors with a 72-35=107 total.  It was Erb’s fourth career tournament victory.

In late September, Oglethorpe tried to defend its title at the Tom O’Briant Memorial at The Cardinal Golf Club in Greensboro, but came up 3 strokes short of #1 ranked Methodist College.  Erb (72-71=143) finished second individually and junior Corey Garner (73-72=145) finished 4th.

Trent Erb won his second tournament of the season with an excellent round of 70-70=140 at the Greensboro Invitational.  Oglethorpe finished sixth of eighteen schools in the tournament.

Oglethorpe finished the fall season at The Gordin Collegiate Classic in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina with a disappointing eleventh place finish.  The Gordin Collegiate field is made up of the nation’s top teams from the previous year’s national tournament field.  Oglethorpe earned its third consecutive invitation to The Gordin.  The Petrels finished 4th in both previous trips to Myrtle Beach in 2001 and 2002.  Corey Garner totaled rounds of 77-72=149 for 19th individually.

Oglethorpe Leads Nationally in Total Short Game and Greens Hit>

The Stormy Petrels lead the nation in hitting greens in regulation and total short game for the fall season.  The petrels hit 59.7 percent or 11 of 18 greens per person in their four tournaments.  Total short game includes both sand save percentage and the percentage of getting up and down from around the green.  Oglethorpe led this category last year and continues to lead again this year.

Individually, Corey Garner leads the country in total short game percentage at .695 and teammate Trent Erb is in 4th place nationally at .615.  Erb is second nationally in greens in regulation at .711 followed by sophomore Joe Green at .630 for sixth nationally.  Erb is fourth nationally in par 4 scoring at 4.08 and Garner is fourth nationally in fairways hit at .695.

Oglethorpe University holds a narrow lead in the Georgia Cup Team of the Year race by an average of 2.46 strokes over Emory University and an average of 2.67 strokes over LaGrange College in what will prove to be one of the closest races in Georgia Cup history.  Trent Erb’s scoring average is 0.46 strokes over par and he holds a 1.43 average stroke lead over LaGrange College’s Mason Crumpler.  Corey Garner is currently in 5th place, Joe Green in 7th, Travis Palladino in 8th, and Jonathan Davis is in 12th place to round out the Stormy Petrels scoring.  The top seven finishers make the All-State Team this year.

STORMY PETRELS FALL TO #1 METHODIST AT THE CARDINAL

Second Day Charge Comes Up Short This Year

The number two ranked Oglethorpe Men’s Golf team battled stroke for stroke with the number one ranked Methodist Monarchs for 36 holes over two days before finally coming up a few strokes short.  The October 1st coaches poll was released on Thursday of this week and Oglethorpe found itself ranked second right behind their playing opponent Methodist. Methodist received 14 first place votes and totaled 501 points.  Oglethorpe finished second in the voting with 458 points and no first place votes.  To view the Golf Coaches Association of America Poll visit www.collegiategolf.com.

Despite closing fast with an excellent round of 292, Oglethorpe came up three strokes short at the Tom O’Briant Memorial Tournament at The Cardinal Golf Club in Greensboro, North Carolina.  Methodist College fired an opening round of 293 to take a four stroke lead over the Petrels after round one.  High swirling winds made scoring extremely difficult and Oglethorpe was one of only two teams to break 300, with their first round score of 297.  For the final round the winds died down most of the day making scoring conditions much more favorable. Oglethorpe was set for another back nine charge.  Last year Oglethorpe came back from 11 strokes in the final round to tie Methodist for first.  In similar fashion, the Petrels came from eight strokes back and overcame Guilford College two years ago.  But this year the back nine magic fell short as Methodist College, led by medalist Adam Horton who fired a final round one under 69, held off the relentless Oglethorpe charge.  Methodist was able to build their lead to seven and eight strokes several times during the middle stretch of holes in the final round making a Stormy Petrel comeback seem unlikely.

Tournament runner-up Trent Erb, playing his last collegiate round at The Cardinal, finished his final round in style with three consecutive threes.  Erb birdied the difficult 16th hole hitting his approach shot to four feet.  He then proceeded to par the signature 196 yard par three and then capped off his final hole with a ten footer for birdie on the 428 yard par four 18th hole.  Erb played the back nine in two-under for the two days. On day two, junior Corey Garner finished the last three holes in one under, playing one group ahead of Erb.  Garner birdied the legendary 17th hole and parred the 16th and 18th holes to edge the Petrels closer to the Monarchs.

Methodist finished with rounds of 293-293 for a 586 two day total and Oglethorpe had rounds of 297-292 for a 589 total.  Host Guilford College finished third on their home course with a total of 591.  Erb’s 72-71-143 total led Oglethorpe and earned him the tournament individual runner-up trophy. Garner’s 73-72-145 placed him fourth overall in the ninety player field.  The sophomore duo of Joe Green 77-75-152 and Jonathan Davis 75-77-152 tied for fifteenth place.  Freshman Travis Palladino, playing in the number 5 position, posted an impressive final round 74, edging his playing partner by two strokes, cutting the Methodist lead to begin the charge.

Stormy Petrels win rain shortened PinIsle Fall Golf Classic

Oglethorpe’s Erb and Emory’s Scherr share medalist honors.

Sept. 22, 2003

Oglethorpe kicked off the fall golf season with a win on their home course, the Renaissance PineIsle Resort at Lake Lanier Islands, on Monday, September 22. High winds and a steady rain gave way to the torrential rains that finally made the course unplayable, and the final nine was washed out.

The relentless rains cut short the final 18 holes, forcing the scheduled 36 hole event to be cut officially to 27 holes. Oglethorpe and the University of the South both shot opening rounds of 298, and Emory trailed by one with a 299. Piedmont College ended round one at 328 in fourth-place.

Round two began with steady winds blowing from the south bringing a huge rainstorm that dumped 2 inches of rain in less than two hours. Senior Trent Erb and Freshman Travis Palladino both fired one-under par 35s on the front nine pacing Oglethorpe to a team total of 2-over par 146 for the final nine. Sophomore Joe Green and Junior Corey Garner both shot 2-over par 38s to round out the scoring at 444 for the two day total.

Emory, led by Jason Scherr’s 70-37-107 (T-1st) and Mike Lebow 75-36-111 (T-5th), followed up their opening round 299 with a five-over closing round 149 for a two-day total of 448 to move ahead of The University of the South, who slipped to third with a second round 161 and a two-day total of 459.

Erb, with nines of 34-38-35=107, won the fourth tournament of his career by coming from 2 strokes behind after day one to tie for medalist honors. Palladino finished fourth in his first college tournament with nine hole rounds of 38-37-35=110. Joe Green finished seventh with nines 36-38-38=112 and Corey Garner’s nines of 37-40-38=115 placed him in 10th. Junior Andrew Clark finished tied for 14th with nines of 37-40-41=118. Individuals Zadoc Williams and Jonathan Davis tied for 11th with 117 totals, and Freshman Brad Sill tied for 14th with a total of 118.
