Women’s Golf Impressive in Debut
September 22, 2004
By Mallory Pusch
Oglethorpe’s women’s golf team has already exceeded expectations
during its season debut. During their first match on Sept. 10 at
Stonebridge Golf Club, Rome, Ga., the team surpassed its top score
by 22 strokes.
OU played in a tri-match with Shorter and Berry College who both
reached the NAIA national tournament last season. Nicole Wiles,
Berry College, won the individual medal in the NAIA national
tournament for the 2003-2004 season. Wiles shot a 75 on Berry’s home
course. However, both Berry and Shorter received a surprise when OU
challenged them on the course.
The team results follow:
Shorter - 320
Berry - 334
Oglethorpe - 355
The Oglethorpe team was lead by freshmen Julia Gates and Mallory
Pusch. Gates lead the pack by shooting an 83, while Pusch followed
with an 88. Senior Heather March, and sophomore Leigh Kite both shot
a 92, rounding out the 355 score. They were supported by senior
Megan Elliott and freshmen Trish Baldwin and Jessi Bonham. Coach Jim
Owen anticipates great things from this young and talented team.
Oglethorpe’s next tournament is Monday, Sept. 13, in Danville,
Ky., where the Stormy Petrels will play in the Centre Fall
Invitational.
