Lady Petrels Ranked Eighth Nationally
October 11th, 2006

After four fall tournaments, the Stormy Petrel women’s golf team has won two and finished third in the two others. This early season success has garnered the Stormy Petrel team some early recognition. The first of the NCAA Division III Women’s golf rankings were released today by Golfstat and the Oglethorpe team was ranked eighth nationally. Methodist College is the top-ranked team, with Gustavus Adolphus, DePauw, Wisconsin-Eau Claire and Middlebury College rounding out the top five.

One of the reasons for the Stormy Petrels' early success has been the play of Julia Gates (Jr.; Kennesaw, Ga.), who has hit 63% of her fairways this fall season. The Stormy Petrel team has four golfers in the top ten in greens hit in regulation, led by sophomore Carrie Shirah (Trussville, Ala.). Sophomore Paige McCollum (Toccoa, Ga.) has been on an early tear on the greens with her putting, averaging 1.956 putts per hole. That average has earned her a No. 2ranking in putts on greens in regulation. Freshmen Trascen Hinz (Opelika, Ala.) and Katie Dale (Peachtree City, Ga., pictured at right) both have helped the Stormy Petrel team to this early season honor, with total short game scores of 45% and 35% respectively, both good for top 10 rankings. The team next competes in Tunica, Miss., to partake in the Rhodes Collegiate Golf Classic.
