Outlook

Coach Michael Lochstampfor's 2001 edition of Oglethorpe's soccer is intent on improving its standing in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.

The Stormy Petrels will rely on their experience this season, despite losing five seniors to graduation. Among those lost were the team's leading scorer and All-SCAC Second Team member Clint Harrison, Daniel Allen, Chris Fort, Mark alas and Jason Solomon. However, the make-up of the current roster will consist of mostly juniors and seniors with valuable game experience in conference play.

Returning to lead the Stormy Petrels on offense is senior forward David Crabbe, also selected to the All-SCAC Second Team.  Crabbe (5g, 9a) was sixth in the conference in assists per game. Expected to support Crabbe are seniors Mark Lauman (lg, 2a) and Matt Patrick (4g, 3a) and junior James Parks (4g, la).

Replacing Fort in the goalkeeper position is junior Derek Sheets.  Also helping to beef up and create a stronger defense in 2001 are senior Garrett Staines and juniors Eric Pinho and Marshall Boggess.

Oglethorpe finished the 2000 season with an overall record of 7-10-1 and a conference record of 3-6, good for seventh place in the SCAC. The Stormy Petrels, predicted to finish eighth in the conference, opened their conference schedule with a good start (2-0) with wins over Millsaps College and The University of the South. Un- fortunately for the Petrels, the season took a downward swing when Oglethorpe lost six consecutive conference matches before winning its last conference match of the season versus Hendrix College.

Despite a losing record, many Stormy Petrel players were rewarded for their accomplishments during the season. Senior Clint Harrison and junior David Crabbe earned spots on the All-SCAC Second Team. Harrison finished seventh in the SCAC in points per game and fifth in goals scored per game. Crabbe claimed sixth place in assists per game and senior goalkeeper Chris Fort finished eighth in the goaltending category.
