Women Topped by Pirates
The Oglethorpe University women's soccer team was defeated by Southwestern on Salamone Field on Sunday afternoon, 2-1. The Petrels are now 5-10 on the season and will get set to host Emory this Tuesday at 3:00 p.m.

Men and Women Blanked by Stout Trinity Squads
The Oglethorpe University men's and women's soccer teams were swept by nationally acclaimed Trinity University on Salamone Field on Friday night. The men fell to the Tigers by the score of 3-0 while the women were downed 8-0.

The two Trinity squads stepped on to Salamone Field today with a combined 23-1-2 record and their play on the pitch certainly supported the sparkling record.
 
The men's team was able to stay with the Tigers for a half, keeping it knotted 0-0, but Trinity broke through with three second half goals to earn the win. With the result, the Stormy Petrel men are now 6-9-2 on the season.
 
The women's team was overmatched by the Tigers and outshot on the afternoon 17-1 before falling by the final score of 8-0. For the season, the women hold a 5-9 overall record.
 
Both teams are back in action this Sunday afternoon when they square of with Southwestern. The men play at 12:00 p.m. followed by the women at 2:00 p.m.

Women Drop Two Road SCAC Matches
The Oglethorpe University women's soccer team lost two SCAC contests on the road this past weekend, falling to Rhodes by the score of 3-0 on Friday and losing to Hendrix 4-0 on Sunday.

With the decisions the Stormy Petrels are now 5-8 in the 2009 season. After consecutive weekends on the road, Oglethorpe returns to Salamone Field this Friday for action against Trinity.

Women Earn Weekend Split, Stun Dallas in Overtime
The Oglethorpe University women's soccer team split a pair of weekend games, losing to Austin 4-0 on Friday and topping the University of Dallas 1-0 in overtime on Sunday.

Oglethorpe and Dallas were still tied zero-zero after 90 minutes of play until Courtney Phillips connected on a goal in the game's first overtime to lift the Stormy Petrels to the win.
 
With the decision Oglethorpe is now 5-6 on the season and will travel to Rhodes College for a contest this coming Friday.

Women Torch Atlanta Christian, 5-0
The Oglethorpe University women's soccer team dominated Atlanta Christian on the road on Tuesday night, 5-0. The Petrels got two first half goals from freshman Brittany Brotherton that were assisted by fellow freshman Courtney Phillips to easily outclass the Chargers.

Phillips added two goals of her own in the second half, the first assisted by Shannon Dougherty and the second by Sasha Alonzo, en route to collecting six points on the evening. Freshman Jenna Ostuw capped the scoring on an unassisted effort and Sarah Nani was only tested once in the goal all evening by Atlanta Christian.
 
The Petrels are now 4-5 on the season and have ten days off before travelling to Texas to face Austin College in SCAC play.

Lady Petrels Lose to Birmingham Southern 4-1
The Oglethorpe women's soccer team held in for around 60 minutes on Sunday afternoon against Birmingham Southern, but in the end could not hold off the visiting Panthers, as the Lady Petrels fell 4-1.

Oglethorpe was only down 1-0 at the half, having conceded a goal in the 31st minute. However, in the second half they conceded goals in the 60th, 63rd and 78th minutes, all three scored by Alicia Plotky for a hat trick.
 
Oglethorpe did get one back in the 86th minute, as Mary Beth Horton collected the ball near the upper-left corner of the penalty box and delivered a beautiful floating shot to the back post, but it wasn't enough.
 
The Lady Petrels now drop to 3-5 on the year, 0-4 in SCAC play.

Petrels Fall to Millsaps 4-1
The Oglethorpe women's soccer team fell 4-1 to Millsaps on Friday.

Millsaps scored the first two goals in the first 34 minutes of the match, but Oglethorpe got one back in the 37th to make it 2-1 at halftime. Ryanne Arola scored the goal on a deflection off a Millsaps defender.
 
However, the visiting Majors were able to put the match away in the second half, scoring goals in the 57th and 86th minutes to acquire the final tally.

Petrels Lose 4-0 to DePauw
The Oglethorpe women's soccer team suffered a 4-0 defeat at the hands of the DePauw Tigers on Sunday, on a muddy field from heavy rains the night before.

Oglethorpe fell behind 3-0 in the first 22 minutes of the match, but did play much better for periods in the second half, even controlling the run of play at times. The Petrels were outshot 6-1 in the first half, but only 5-4 in the second.

Women Blanked by Centre in Conference Opener
The Oglethorpe University women's soccer team lost their SCAC opener to Centre College on Salamone Field on Friday afternoon, 2-0. The Colonels managed to dominate possession and the shot count (15-3) to grab the conference victory.

Oglethorpe (3-2) will be  back in action looking for their first conference win of the 2009 season on Sunday when they face DePauw University at 2:00 p.m. on Salamone Field.

Women Lose First Match of 2009 Season
The Oglethorpe University women's soccer team lost their first match of the 2009 season in Demorest, Georgia on Tuesday evening to the Piedmont College Lions, 3-1. The Lions scored their three goals on only six shots to send Oglethorpe to a 3-1 record on the season.

After falling behind 3-0, the Stormy Petrels recorded their lone goal with only five minutes remaining in the contest when sophomore Sasha Alonzo fed freshman Courtney Phillips for the score.
 
Oglethorpe begins conference play this Friday when they square off with Centre College on Salamone Field at 4:00 p.m.

Women's Soccer Match with Emory Postponed
The Oglethorpe University women's soccer match scheduled for conclusion today has been suspended due to inclement weather and make-up date has yet to be announced.

Women Tie School Record in Thrashing of Tennessee Temple
The Oglethorpe University women's soccer team tied school records for most goals scored in a game (14) and largest margin of victory in a 14-0 thrashing of visiting Tennessee Temple on Salamone Field on Thursday afternoon.

The Stormy Petrels also topped Fisk College by the same score on September 30, 2004. Oglethorpe scored early and often against an overmatched young Crusader team to cruise to the victory.
 
For the afternoon both Shannon Dougherty and Ryanne Arola recorded hat tricks with three goals apiece. Lexi Vassell dished three assists and scored a goal of her own while freshman Courtney Phillips recorded two assists. Mary Beth Horton posted five points on the evening with two goals and an assist and Hannah Parker came off the bench to score the first two goals of her career in the blowout win.
 
The Petrels outshot the Crusaders 42-2 in the landslide victory and managed to lift their record to an unblemished 3-0 mark on the season. The competition will stiffen dramatically, however, as Oglethorpe braces to host Emory University on Salamone Field next Wednesday at 3:00 p.m.

Women Knock Off Jaguars, Improve to 2-0
The Oglethorpe University women's soccer team defeated Spelman College on Salamone Field on Thursday evening in their home opener, 2-1. With the win, the Petrels have pushed their record to 2-0 on the young season.

Spelman struck first with a goal off the head of Taylor Tindle in the first half to give the Jags a 1-0 lead. Working hard for the equalizer, the Petrels got it in the game's 55th minute when Lexi Vassell used her head to find an open Shannon Dougherty who cracked a left-footed goal into the back of the net.
 
The match looked headed for overtime until sophomore Eliza Newland blasted a free kick past Spelman's keeper for the game winner in the 82nd minute. Newland's shot came from 25 yards out and could not be stopped by the Jags Amanda Tyler.
 
For the night, Spelman managed 8 shots while Oglethorpe got off 7. Four of the Petrels shots were on target while only three of the Jaguars shots made it on goal.
 
The Petrels are back in action next Thursday afternoon when they take on Tennessee Temple at 3:30 p.m. on Salamone Field.

Petrels Beat Lady Scots in 2009 Debut
The Oglethorpe University women's soccer team beat Agnes Scott in Decatur, Georgia on Tuesday night in their season opener, 2-1.

The Petrels got an unassisted goal from sophomore Lexi Vassell to get on the board in the second half. Then, with 15 minutes remaining in the game, a driving Shannon Dougherty fed freshman Courtney Phillips a cross that Phillips one-touched into the back of the net for the deciding goal.
 
The Petrels were also lifted by the return of Kristen Koch to the pitch after missing successive seasons with knee injuries.
 
At 1-0 on the young season, Oglethorpe returns to Salamone Field to face Spelman at 5:00 p.m. on Friday in the women's home opener.

Brown, Vaughan Selected to Men's and Women's Soccer All-Sportsmanship Teams
Oglethorpe University senior men's soccer player Daniel Brown and and senior women's soccer player Julie Vaughan have been selected as members of the 2008 Men's and Women's Soccer All-Sportsmanship Teams.

The SCAC is placing a special emphasis on sportsmanship this year – asking all fans of the conference to exhibit good sportsmanship at all conference functions throughout the 2008-2009 season.


 
Each head coach was asked to elect one member from his or her team who displayed good sportsmanship throughout the season.
 
Men's head coach Jon Akin and women's head coach Alan Woods will miss the strong leadership qualities both Brown and Vaughan brought to the pitch when they graduate this spring.
