2008 Men's Tennis Outlook
As told by head men's tennis coach, Peter Howell:
Our 2008 men’s team will be challenged by a difficult schedule and the loss of our top 3 players from 2007. We will open the season the weekend of Feb. 29th at home against #14 Piedmont College, #15 Averett College and #10 Methodist College so we will find out early how competitive we are.
We will be a young team with 3 freshmen, a Sophomore, a Jr. and a Sr. in the top 6. Our freshmen are Felix Mann, from Herndon, VA who will battle for #1; Ross Beall from Marietta, GA will play a solid #4 and Alex Lindburg from Aiken, SC who looks to be #5. How these freshmen develop will have a huge bearing on our team.
Sr. Captain Brick Faucette, Powder springs, GA has shown great leadership and is much improved. He and Jr. Gabe Henderson, Albertville, AL will play in the top 3 positions challenging Felix for the #1 spot. Sophomores Brad White, Cartersville, GA and Joey Kosciolek, Lawrenceville, GA are battling for the #6 spot. Both are much improved with a year of experience under their belt.
Freshman Lawrence Sweatman, Memphis, TN and Jr. Carlos Carthen, Fairburn, GA have been working on their game and will challenge for the playing spots.
Our doubles combinations are yet to be set, but we are looking at putting Freshmen Ross Beall and Felix Mann together. Ross is our best doubles player with excellent hands and volleys. Putting Gabe and Brick together will give us needed experience in the #1 position, and Alex and Joey are also being considered for #3 at this time. We will need for the doubles teams to gel quickly as that was a weakness last year.
As I mentioned earlier, our schedule is tough as we play 2 nationally ranked teams (Amherst#13, and Rhodes #24) and 7 regionally ranked teams. Our freshmen will have to grow up quick, our upper classmen continue to improve, and our doubles teams come together in order for us to break back into the rankings. We have enjoyed being regionally ranked each of the last two years, and that is where we want to be.
